(Gather) taptap... Is this thing on?

Gathering 2K2... are we still on for Boston? Have we got an agenda?
Is anybody surprised to realize they're still subscribed to this
list/sublist?

I'm ready if you are. A target date of September 20 - 22/23 has been chosen.

As for the agenda, anyone have any preferences? To keep with the tradition
established last year, a visit to a RenFaire is in order. The local one is
King Richard's Faire .

Oh, that one looks like fun. I'll try to avoid having to put a
sewing machine on the airplane.

I think the New England Aquarium would be a good visit. (Nearest
aquarium to us is Denver, a twelve-hour drive or so (well, less now
that the speed limit's raised.)) And/or the zoo, although we're a
little less deprived in that regard (we just like seeing new zoos).

And us hicks would probably be pretty impressed by Harvard and MIT,
too. Dunno about any other attendees.

Oh, and Carl needs to see the ocean, of course. (Heck, *I* haven't
seen one in, um, about a quarter century. Eek.)

There should also be a seafood or other Local Food event.

And at some point during the weekend, it will probably be necessary
to have a dinner with some alt.folklore.urban folks.

We have one you can borrow, if withdrawal strikes.

Boston has a zoo? (Two actually: .) I've
never been to either, because until recently they were not nice places. I
know that they've done a lot of work on them in recent years, so things may
well have changed.

Given how many friends I have that are students/employees/alumni of MIT,
that should not be a problem. And the outside of Harvard is *very* easy to
see.

Seeing it is easy, you will definitely do so if you fly into Logan (it's an
island in Boston Harbor). Splashing in it could be arranged.

Definitely.

Sounds interesting.

Bummer. Whenever you come out here, you can visit ours. It *is* a
nice place.

In September? I think that's what happened that quarter-century ago
(only on the other coast, and the other end of the season) and I
spent half my vacation with pneumonia.

Should be. It's a crowd not unlike asr in outlook, but with more
occupational diversity. And with a long history of get-togethers,
too.

Allison has brought the Southwick Zoo to my
attention. It turns out to not be very far from us (as such things go at
least).

Actually, given the way the Gulf Stream works, the waters around here are
warmer than those off California most of the time.

I'm not addicted to sewing. Now, fabric shopping, that's

That's what they told me in California, only it was the Something-
Something Current.

We have drive-in restaurants here (drive-in theaters, too, but that's
not germane) which serve, among other things, slushes of various odd
flavors. One of them is "Ocean Water." Carl keeps suggesting it,
and I keep telling him it doesn't matter if it's been twenty-some
years, that *still* calls to mind the taste of, well, ocean water.
Yeccchhh. (It's also a weird blue, and is, um, pina colada flavored
or something. Or so Carl says. I don't eat or drink *anything* that
color, no matter what it's named.) I'll have a nice traditional
grape slush, thankyouverymuch.

Ah yes, she who dies with the most fabric wins?

Then we'll just take you to a place you can look at it from afar, then.

"Proper" slushes are pretty much unknown here in New England. And no one
would even *think* about calling one "Ocean Water". And weird blue is
reserved for raspberry.

Just over six weeks away... we've kind of dropped the ball on drumming up
interest.

Is _anybody_ outside of the Cravens and the Feldhusens interested in
getting together for gaming and the renfaire in Boston the weekend of
September 21? Or is it going to be just the four of us again?

Oh, yeah... Mike, what area should people look for a hotel in? You can
reply here or update the Gathering page directly...

I love the idea, personally, but I fear there is zero chance of my making
it. There are already more relatives clamoring for us to visit than we have
time or budget to do so. As such, it would be very difficult to justify a
gaming weekend, alas.

I'd be interested in at least a meet & greet. I live in Cambridge
(across the river from Boston) so I can be rather flexible :)

I went to MIT & have a working alumni card, so I can get you in if you
want- though most of the interesting places won't require one. (Off the
beaten path is 'Strobe Alley' where Doc Edgerton, the inventor of strobe
photography, did his stuff. Some cool strobe-based toys there.)

I set this message aside to reply to later, then forgot about it. I'd
like it if you can still join us.

I'd really like to see the place, but our schedule is pretty packed
already, so I think we'll have to pass.
