(Gather) Oddball tour option

Coincidentally enough, I'm in the process of negotiating a business
relationship with National Fiber Technologies, in Lawrence, MA.

What they are, is a company that produces custom fur products (Mike,
just shut up, okay?) for museum replicas, Hollywood and whatnot.

I gather their setup is that they've got a bunch of looms and such
that are over fifty years old (at least, that's when they were last
made), and that it's a pretty interesting thing to see, at least if
you're fascinated by intricate mechanical gizmos. They don't do
formal tours (that I know of), but I might could talk them into
letting a few geeks in to rubberneck. Folks who've done so say it's
cool, at least from the sewing-geek standpoint.

Presumably that'd only be a Friday-afternoon-right-after-we-arrive
sort of thing, unless they work weekends. Should I ask?

Moi? I'm not sure what you thought I might say, but I really don't have a
comment here.

Sure, go ahead.

I'm dragging you to a fabric place.

Okay. I talked to Fred Fehrmann today, who just bought the place
last October when the previous owner retired. He and his partner
came in from California, where they worked for Disney's Imagineering
thingamajig, so they were end-users of the stuff who liked it so much
they bought the company. I said "I'm going to be in Boston next
month..." and he said "Sure, come on out!" before I finished the
sentence. Really nice guy, and sounds like an interesting place. We
can drop by anytime Friday (they don't normally work weekends, but
he'd've opened the place for us if we wanted).

My own wife's done that often enough and this sounds like an interesting
one. For that matter, I've dragged her at times as well.

Remember, you're not the only one who sews/costumes.

OK, sounds cool. Get directions from a major highway that a local would
know and we'll do it.

Up 93 to wherever Mapquest says to go from there (I've got their
address somewhere here, somethingorother Canal Street). He says it's
about half an hour from Boston; Mapquest sez 45 minutes from Logan.

Well, you are the one who took a sewing machine with you last year. That's
probably the sign of *something*.

OK, remind me with the address once things get closer.

Yeah: procrastination. That's different. It's a chronic condition,
rather than an addiction.

Speaking of which, I still don't have my bodice reworked, Carl's
cloak-to-be is still rolled up in a fabric bin, and his hose are
(is?) still a piece of undyed white cotton/lycra. I do have my
skirts hemmed, at least...

I spent most of my last pre-Faire sewing frenzy making Nathan's
outfit: . Didn't have
to worry about my bodice fitting, nobody was looking at *me*.

And now Carl's gone and brought up the "I need a dragon to sit on my
shoulder" thing, which is a big distraction. I went and searched for
them on the Internet, and I've come to one conclusion: stuffed
dragons are massively overfed. 99% of them are fat pear-shaped
things that could *never* fly. Bah.

There are some interesting latex ones out there, but I showed Carl a
link and he didn't seem impressed.

(*I* need a griffin to sit on my shoulder. Dragons are really nifty,
but everybody and his brother has one. Then again, maybe what I
really need is a phoenix.)

Speaking of which, what might we expect the weather to be like at King
Richard's in late September, Mike? Probably not cool enough to justify
dragging a heavy wool cloak around, eh? (KC was a fluke... it was
supposed to be cold and rainy.)

With flames. Real flames.

But anyhow... the dragon _I_ want isn't something anybody else has got.
The ones you showed me on the web were too tiny. (The dragon _I_ want
probably can't be made. Sigh.)

Not that dragons are period anyway.

How about this guy?

At least he's not as fat as
http://store2.yimg.com/I/kazootoys_1699_19402555
or
http://store2.yimg.com/I/mysticaldragon_1698_16865993

There's always this guy, if you want to go for realism:
http://store3.yimg.com/I/tayabas_1696_4530002

Or this guy, if you want the commercial tie-in:

Might. How well does that stuff burn?

Can't tell how big he is. And I'm thinking latex for the amount of detail
I want. And about a four or five-foot wingspan. The dragon from
Dragonslayer might be a good basis.

Oh. You hadn't mentioned that you wanted a *singularly ugly* dragon.

Latex is probably pretty hard to sew.

It can vary from hot (90s) to cool (60s) with no way to predict it this far
out. Normal for that time of year would be upper 70s. I'll post a
forecast when it gets down to a week out, not that it will do much good, as
things change a good deal in a week.

I was afraid of that... trying to put a priority on the costuming bits.
Don't want to take the time finishing the cloak if I'm not going to wear
it.

Update: It's a *really cool* fabric place. I got samples (by
FedEx). Stretchy lion mane (12" modacrylic and yak hair), yellow
Teletubby (Teletubbie? I have no idea what the singular is) fur (I
always assumed that was some sort of fleece, but it's very short
rayon fur), alpaca, mohair... it's fun stuff. I have no idea what
I'd do with most of it.

It remains to be seen whether it's a really-cool fabric-place as well
as a really-cool-fabric place, of course.
