Higgins is cool and not too far away. I should have thought of that myself.

Unfortunately, they close at 4, so it won't be possible to fit it in Friday
after Karen's Fake-Fur Tour.

Suggestions as to when it would work? Early Saturday is about all I can see.

(Gather) Higgins Armory...

On Mon, 26 Aug 2002, Michael J. Feldhusen wrote:

They open at 10 on Saturday... we could do the Armory on Saturday morning
and the Faire on Sunday morning.

I suppose that some of this depends on whether anybody else wants to go...
Karen and I are going to be pretty much the only attendees who don't live
in the area. The Armory isn't high on Karen's list, so she could take or
leave it.

So I'm thinking a schedule something like this:

Friday: Karen and I arrive at noon, we grab lunch and hit the fur factory.
(Karen recently noted: if anybody else wants to go to this, we need to
clear it with the factory owner... he's expecting just four people. So
let us know.) We would look for other visitors to arrive late afternoon
or evening. Do we want to try roleplaying on Friday night, or should we
look for discussion over dinner, perhaps followed up by board games?

Saturday: Higgins Armory at 10 sharp, followed by lunch. Back home for
gaming and the like, dinner, more gaming?

Sunday: King Richard's Faire at 10:30 or so (that's when the gates open).
Lunch at the Faire, probably head home around 2 or 3? More gaming and
dinner.

Monday: Breakfast and our plane leaves at noonish.

We need to set afternoon times that we'll be "home" to meet people
arriving to game on the various days. Mike, I'm hoping you can help firm
up some times here, since I expect you have a better idea of how long it
takes to get from place to place, how long we might stay at the Armory and
the Faire, and what else we might want to be doing.

I'm figuring that at least one evening we'll call out for pizza, that
being a gaming tradition. If we can use your kitchen, Karen and I might
cook if we've got the time and feel up to it.

While not of the quality of the Royal Armory in Leeds England (very few
places are, though, and probably none of them are in this hemisphere), the
Higgins is a nice place. Regrettably, the mail exhibition will have ended
by then. (Which means that Allison and I have to get over there and see it
before it does.)

I suppose that will depend on how many will be attending. Could anyone who
is at least *considering* attending please post (or if you don't want to
post publicly, please email Carl *and* myself) that information as well
when you think you might be there? If you have actual preferences of what
you'd like to do when, please let us know. It would help greatly in the
planning.

>Saturday: Higgins Armory at 10 sharp, followed by lunch. Back home for

Sounds good. Please note that Allison and have an "other commitment" for
that evening and so will be leaving the house in the care of Carl and Karen.

>Sunday: King Richard's Faire at 10:30 or so (that's when the gates open).

That sounds like a good plan. Please note, getting to/from KRF from our
places does take a considerable amount of time. I will post an estimate of
how much time that will take once I speak with Allison on this.

>Monday: Breakfast and our plane leaves at noonish.

That will not actually leave time for much besides socializing over the
breakfast table, what with the necessary check-in lead times and traffic
allowances.

The Armory can be done in about 2 hours, and the travel time is not
significant (about half an hour, IIRC). As with the KRF travel time, I
will double check with Allison (she has a much better feel from how these
things take, my time sense when travelling is not at all reliable). I
believe your estimate of how long we'll stay at KRF is pretty good, as
that's about when we usually leave.

>I'm figuring that at least one evening we'll call out for pizza, that

There is a very good pizza place right across the street (highway) from our
house, and they deliver.

I'm on the 'probably' side of the 'considering-attending' list. I'm
definitely interested in the Higgins, and not in the Faire. I haven't
got any other preferences on times, places, or actions.

I've started a list of attendees and an event matrix on the Wiki page...
http://www.phoenyx.net/cgi-bin/twiki/bin/view/Gamers/PhoenyxGathering2002

We're looking at a potential eleven attendees, but exact days and events
are sketchy. I'll be putting times on the events as soon as possible.

Right... I debated over this, but decided that I wanted to get home at a
reasonable hour.

I have added a link to the directions to our place, on the bottom after the

I was just pointing out the reality, as people can be mistaken about the

I've done just enough business travel to know that two hours in advance
isn't unreasonable, and even more so with the greater security measures.

More information to be used for planning (I was sure I had posted this, but
now can't find any copies of it, it may have gotten lost during a session
of network hiccups we had earlier):

The travel time from our place to King Richard's Faire is approximately 90
minutes.

The travel time from our place to the Higgins Armory is approximately 30 -
45 minutes.

I hope this information is useful to those who are considering participating.

I know I haven't posted this... NFT is at 300 Canal Street, Lawrence, MA.
(And I have tentative acceptance on a quote, so once we nail down the

Well, that's a bit further off the beaten track than I thought it was going
to be. It's probably about an hour from the airport.

About how long do you expect the tour and such to take?

Okay... a near-complete draft of the schedule as I see it follows. Review
it and see what you think. Mike, you're my reality checker
here... don't hesitate to tell me I'm grossly underestimating travel
times or such.

Friday:

11:18 AM - Karen and I arrive at BOS airport, discounting delays

(My stomach is going to call that 12:18. The drive to National
Fiber Technologies is about an hour. Do we need to plan for lunch
    before the NFT tour?)

Let's call it two hours to get out of the airport, get something to
eat, and drive to NFT. That'll put us there at... call it 1:30.

1:30 PM - National Fiber Tech tour.

Karen says at least an hour and a half, 'cause she might half to
talk business. Drive home is what, another hour or more?
   That would be around 4:00.

This is where it gets vague... what are our Friday night plans?
The only people confirmed for Friday at this point are the
Feldhusens, Karen and I. (Steve Hammond has a work conflict that
is going to delay him until Sunday events.) I'm thinking that
Friday is dinner, conversation, and maybe retiring to the
Feldhusen's for some board and card games if anybody's interested.

There's a bit of a gap between our arriving back in Marlborough and
an appropriate dinner time. I guess the four of us can hang around
and talk, maybe play some short games until dinner time. Folks
could start showing up to hang out before dinner by, say, 5:00 to
give us plenty of margin to get back from the NFT tour. (I'm
probably micro-managing this, but I don't want anybody left out if
having a precise schedule would allow them to participate.)

5:00 PM - Gather at the Feldhusen's for pre-dinner casual time.

This will allow those close by to arrive moderately early, but if
we plan a late dinner we allow those who might have to drive a bit
   after work to reach us.

7:00 PM - Dinner and after-dinner casual time.

After dinner, provided we don't sit around the restaurant and talk
all night, we'd retire to the Feldhusens' for more chat and gaming.

Saturday

??:?? AM - Breakfast.

If anybody's interested in having breakfast with us on Saturday,
let's negotiate a time and place.

10:00 AM - Higgins Armory Museum, with lunch to follow.

I believe we'd decided this'll take about two hours, so we'll catch
lunch afterward. Unless we're totally in the wrong area, this
seems like a good time to catch a game shop. (Mostly for Karen and
I... everyone else is from the area and probably couldn't care
less.) We'll decide after lunch if we have enough time or if
there's something else we'd rather do.

The important thing here is that we need a target time we can say
we'll definitely be back at Home Base for anyone arriving for
Saturday Night activities. To be consistent with the other days,
I'm going to call this 4:00 unless someone else has a better idea.

4:00 PM - Convene at Feldhusen's for dinner and gaming

Hmm... looks like a sparse crowd on Saturday night with the
Feldhusens missing. Ann Dupuis might be available to run a Fudge
game here. I could run one on this night if Ann doesn't, but the
question is, will there be enough people here at this time to
bother? Our "confirmed" list has dwindled a bit. I need to check
on some of the "maybe's" now that we're less than a week away and I
should be able to get yea's or nay's. We'll firm up the activity
when I have a better idea of who'll be there. (Not everyone
interested is reading this list... I'm going to send a copy of this
   out to them as well.)

Sunday

10:30 AM - King Richard's Faire

4:00 PM - Convene at Feldhusen's for dinner and gaming

Pretty much the same deal as yesterday.

Monday

Karen and I leave at noon.

Actually, your stomach is going to call that 10:18. We're an hour *ahead*,
not behind.

Reasonable. The only problem will be finding someplace for lunch. I think
Woburn is a good spot, any food preferences?

If there aren't any takers, I was planning on sticking in some stops at
game stores in here, one in Malden and one in Harvard Square, along with
dinner at a Tex/Mex place in Harvard Sq.

Please let us know if you want to join us for dinner, because if we don't
hear from anybody by Friday morning, we'll be doing dinner in Harvard
Sq. If you don't know whether or not you'll be joining or us may want to
meet in HS, email me for my cell phone number *before* Friday

Actually, I'd say 2:30 to 3 would be a better estimate, unless we end up
skipping the game stores Friday night and try to do at least one of them at
this point. The store in Marlborough itself can be done in this time frame
without a serious problem.

You don't know my stomach.

Actually, I spend so much time working with folks in Seattle I habitually
adjust in that direction. I must have been on autopilot or something.

I'm easy. Stuff I can't get (done well) around Kansas is good, but not
necessary for on-the-run stuff.

That works well for me... so far, it doesn't look like there's anybody
else planning on Friday night. (Too many things have come up for people,
including lost jobs, no ride, and work issues.)

I've updated the schedule page and will make sure everyone knows about it.

This, at least the dinner, is something I'd be interested in if work
doesn't conspire to get me (unlikely though). I'm 15 minutes from
Harvard Square (which is likely longer than the wait at Border Cafe on a
Friday night) so I can wander by any time.

For what it's worth, anyway- this is probably too late to do anything :)

Sorry we missed you.

We ended up eating at Fire & Ice (with no wait).

No wait? Well, I guess if cooking was considered optional...

Imperial Blues (A Fudge RPG setting for the Phoenyx Gather)

[Posted both to Gamers and Fudge.]

OK, I've whipped up a quick & dirty web page for the one-shot I'll have
ready to run at the Phoenyx Gather. The formatting sucks because I don't
have enough time to go through and tweak the HTML that Word Perfect spits
out. I'll have handouts with much better formatting at the Gather.

Here's the URL:

know what you think.

GAMERS is about roleplaying games (including sims) and almost anything of interest to the average roleplayer.
