RPG Meme Bandwagon

Well, since a few Phoenycians have participated (in their own blogs), I
guess I'll spread this, from
http://www.livejournal.com/users/matt_snyder/37084.html. I'm not usually
much into surveys, but:

1. What is the first RPG you ever played?

2. What RPG do you currently play most often?

3. What is the best system you've played?

4. What is the best system you've run?

5. Would you consider yourself an: Elitist/ Min-Maxer/ Rules Lawyer?

6. If you could recommend a new RPG which would you recommend? Why?

7. How often do you play?

8. What sort of characters do you play? Leader? Follower? Comic Relief?
Roll-Player/ Role-Player?

9. What is your favourite Genre for RPGs?

10. What Genres have you played in?

11. Do you prefer to play or GM? Do you do both?

12. Do you like religion in your games?

13. Do you have taboo subjects in your games or is everything "fair game"?

14. Have you developed your own RPG before?

15. Have you ever been published in the Gaming Industry? If so...what?

And if you've already answered this elsewhere, post a link or repeat your
answers (or heck, answer differently), your choice.

Mine's in the roleplaying section
(http://www.phoenyx.net/feeds/KarenCravens-roleplay.rss) of my scratch
blog (http://www.phoenyx.net/feeds/KarenCravens.rss).

Technically, a non-RSS version is available over on the test server. The
eventual url will be http://www.phoenyx.net/KarenCravens/8.html but at the
moment you'll want to replace "www" with "test." (I don't explicitly do
so because I'd prefer the test server didn't get its address embedded
forever in links...)

> 1. What is the first RPG you ever played?

1st edition AD&D, 1980.

> 2. What RPG do you currently play most often?

A tossup between D&D 3.5 and Champions 5th. Though, if you're just
counting playing (instead of play or GM), 3.5 goes into the lead -- I
know a couple Champs GMs locally, but they prefer "PCs are of no
importance" gameworlds ruled by their pet NPCs and I find such games
boring. I normally have to GM to get my Hero fix.

> 3. What is the best system you've played?
> 4. What is the best system you've run?

Probably Hero for both -- it's the one I have the most experience with.
D&D is good for quick games, though.

> 5. Would you consider yourself an: Elitist/ Min-Maxer/ Rules
> Lawyer?

I haven't heard the first term in the list before, is it on the lines of
the second and third?

> 6. If you could recommend a new RPG which would you recommend?
> Why?

If you mean a brand new game, I'm going to have to pass. Most of what
I'm familiar with in the stores isn't completely new.

> >> 7. How often do you play?

Once a week, two different games on an alternating schedule.

> 8. What sort of characters do you play? Leader? Follower? Comic
> Relief?
> Roll-Player/ Role-Player?

I don't like coming into an established game and taking over the leader
role right off the bat, but at the beginning of a game I'll tend toward
that role. If not the overall leader, then the "expert consultant" for
the leader for one area.

> 9. What is your favourite Genre for RPGs?

I really wish there were more pulp games out there.

> 10. What Genres have you played in?

Pulp, superheroes, fantasy, some horror, some SF, very little comedy (but
I want to snag a copy of Paranoia XP for old times sake).

> 11. Do you prefer to play or GM? Do you do both?

I enjoy either.

> 12. Do you like religion in your games?

Do you mean religion as a major plot element? The gamers I know have a
wide range of religious backgrounds, it would be difficult for me to run
a religion storyline without turning the session into a Comparative
Religions discussion group.

> 13. Do you have taboo subjects in your games or is everything
> "fair game"?

I prefer to keep matters at a PG-13 rating. When running, if I get into
R territory I keep it non-graphic. If running at a convention, I don't
let it get into R -- the local con gets a lot of kids.

> 14. Have you developed your own RPG before?

No.

> 15. Have you ever been published in the Gaming Industry? If
> so...what?

Three articles in Digital Hero (Hero Games' electronic magazine), a
couple reviews in Pyramid Online, plus proofreading credits for the Hero
System Bestiary (5th edition), Champions (5th), and Hero System Rulebook
- Revised.

I might as well toss my two cents in on this as well. :)

D&D, the red-boxed Basic set. That and Car Wars were my first
introduction to games beyond what Hasbro sold. (How times have
changed...)

>
> 2. What RPG do you currently play most often?

I play AD&D 2nd edition almost weekly, as that's what that group is
accustomed to. I also play almost semi-weekly in Carl's heroes game using
Fudge.

>
> 3. What is the best system you've played?

Fudge, though I don't play or run it as much as I'd like. With AD&D, I
tend to lose the story amongst the rules too much.

>
> 4. What is the best system you've run?

Fudge, for the same reason as above.

>
> 5. Would you consider yourself an: Elitist/ Min-Maxer/ Rules Lawyer?

Some of all, really. Story of my life is that I never seem to fit
conveniently into stereotypes.

>
> 6. If you could recommend a new RPG which would you recommend? Why?

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to keep up with the recent game
releases. So much of it is D20 related that it seems there's nothing new
out there.

>
> 7. How often do you play?

Mostly weekly in one game, and mostly semi-weekly in the other.
>
> 8. What sort of characters do you play? Leader? Follower? Comic Relief?
> Roll-Player/ Role-Player?

It depends on the campaign and the other characters. If I can, I'll make
a character that fills a hole in the group dynamic.

Roll/Role: I try to focus on role-playing, but easily fall out of
character when trying to solve in-game problems. In AD&D it's very easy
for me to simply fall back on the rules and let the character take a back
seat to the game. :(

>
> 9. What is your favourite Genre for RPGs?

I'm not sure. I've almost entirely played fantasy, but that's due to
situation more than interest. I think I've convinced the fantasy-centric
player in the weekly campaign to give the Star Wars-esque campaign I'm
working on a try, so hopefully I'll have a chance to see how that goes.

>
> 10. What Genres have you played in?

Mostly fantasy, occasionally short sci-fi games. Currently in my first
Heroes game and having fun.

>
> 11. Do you prefer to play or GM? Do you do both?

I used to enjoy both, though after 5 years of almost no gaming at all I
have learned that GMing is _not_ like riding a bicycle. Once I have a
chance to relearn how to run a game, it'll be a lot more enjoyable.

>
> 12. Do you like religion in your games?

Religion tends to take a back seat to other things. I don't try to
explore religious issues in a game, but at times they do come up.

>
> 13. Do you have taboo subjects in your games or is everything "fair game"?

My main thing is that the characters are heroes. They may be "dark"
heroes, but the hero part takes precedence over the dark part. I don't
kill off characters often, but a PC that randomly slaughters innocents
won't live very long.

>
> 14. Have you developed your own RPG before?

I think every serious gamer has thought about this at one point or
another. I was playing around with ideas for my old Alpha Station
campaign, and came across Fudge while mining various free rpg systems out
there for ideas. I think I still have those system notes in a binder
around here somewhere...

>
> 15. Have you ever been published in the Gaming Industry? If so...what?

I don't believe I have; if so, I've slept since then, so I could easily
have forgotten. :)

OD&D 3 Books, white Box

Champions. Played fairly solidly between 80 to 95

Mine. Bordering that, Hero System

Mine. Bordering that, Hero System

> 5. Would you consider yourself an: Elitist/

I have a background in accounting, so I can min-max in
my sleep. I have been GMing since 1977, so I can quote
rules in sleep. However, I am more a genre fantatic/
story teller type.

> 6. If you could recommend a new RPG which would you
> recommend? Why?
D20, so a person know the Lingua Franca of Gaming.

> 7. How often do you play?
Online only these days, once a day posting/Gming
online. No realworld play at this point. I used to
play once a week and GM once a week for eight or so
years.

> 8. What sort of characters do you play? Leader?
> Follower? Comic Relief?
When I play, I play a wide variety from a combat
monsters (literally
http://www.strolen.com/npc/viewnpc.php?npc_id=319&offset=0&order=updated&dir=Desc&index=1
), a swashbuckler, a myserious ghost, a spunky super,
and Dirty Harry as a Paladin, depending on the game.

> Roll-Player/ Role-Player?
Role-Player, who understands it is a game and numbers
are involved.

> 9. What is your favourite Genre for RPGs?
Super Hero

> 10. What Genres have you played in?
Fantasy (High/ Low/ Dark), Science Fiction, Espionage,
Military, Technothriller, SuperHero (4 color, Fantasy,
Dark, and specialized). I think the only thing I have
not played is a Sojo Romance.

> 11. Do you prefer to play or GM? Do you do both?
GM. I do both, but I prefer GMing,

> 12. Do you like religion in your games?
It can be a great element in the game, but most people
don't like to add it.... so I tend not to have it.

> 13. Do you have taboo subjects in your games or is
> everything "fair game"?
Everything is fair game, within the bounds of good
taste.

> 14. Have you developed your own RPG before?
Yes.

> 15. Have you ever been published in the Gaming
> Industry? If so...what?
I was an old Hero system Playtester. Tri-Tac was about
to publish some of my stuff in the way back, before it
went dormant for a decade. I am about to be small
press published in Midian.

> 1. What is the first RPG you ever played?

The first rpg I played... that'd be Gurps 3rd Ed.,
Revised. I played the solo adventure in the back...
then I ran the solo adventure as a GM for my buddies.
I discovered that I was good at running games but I've
never -ever- had the chance to play a game, as no one
I know has ever been knowledgeable enough about RPGs
to want to be a GM.

> 2. What RPG do you currently play most often?

I run Fudge and only Fudge, though I use Gurps books
as a resource.

> 3. What is the best system you've played?

I've only 'played' Gurps.

> 4. What is the best system you've run?

Fudge. Hands down.

> 5. Would you consider yourself an: Elitist/
> Min-Maxer/ Rules Lawyer?

Well, I don't play RPGs, I run them... so none of
those really apply.

> 6. If you could recommend a new RPG which would you
> recommend? Why?

I'd recomend Fudge. Fudge is just awesome for GMs.

> 7. How often do you play?

I havent ran an RPG in forever... I've just left for
college and I don't think any of my current friends
are into RPGs.

> 8. What sort of characters do you play? Leader?
> Follower? Comic Relief?

I don't play characters.

> Roll-Player/ Role-Player?

Again, I don't play... but if I had to choose I'd say
I was a role-player, though I do sometimes enjoy
tactical games.

> 9. What is your favourite Genre for RPGs?

I like just about any genre that really gets my brain
working... but I prefer to read (and thus I get most
of my inspiration from) science fiction.

> 10. What Genres have you played in?

Well... I've only played in the semi-fantasy solo
adventure in the Gurps book... but I've ran just about
anything... from prehistoric horror to futuristic
comedy.

> 11. Do you prefer to play or GM? Do you do both?

I don't really have a choice... I enjoy GMing greatly,
but I've never had someone be a GM for me, so I don't
really know what it is like to play an RPG.

> 12. Do you like religion in your games?

I don't usually have religion play a big part of my
RPGs... it's not that I don't like religion, it's just
that it doesn't tend to enter my mind much and thus I
don't tend to incorporate it into my RPGs.

> 13. Do you have taboo subjects in your games or is
> everything "fair game"?

It depends on where I am running the game... obviously
cussing is fine at home, but if you are playing in the
school library, you don't want to be describing rape
or having players cuss in-character.

> 14. Have you developed your own RPG before?

Yep! That's what I do all the time. I'm a
Fudge-addict.

> 15. Have you ever been published in the Gaming
> Industry? If so...what?

Well, I've never been published unless you count the
Fudge Twiki or the Fudge mailing list... but I'm an
editor for Fudge Factor (the Fudge magazine).
