Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr - 32 : Intruders!

[Jorg]

Jorg can't quite make out what they saying, but he thinks he caught
the phrase "soft blancmange" spoken by someone in a very strange
accent. He has no idea quite why they're talking catering.

He enters the room to see the room full of people, several of them
armed. At first glance, he doesn't recognise any of them!

[Duplar, Ryzar, Reylorna, Jaldaric]

Someone comes through the door...

[Can everyone post descriptions of their character, please?]

Kalyr - 32 : Intruders!

[Reylorna]

Dressed in a stark white robe a young girl watches the intruder enter.
Her face shows the soft lines of someone who is intently studious. Her
brown hair wreathes her face and shows of her brown eyes. Though she
wears a dagger at her belt, it is sheathed. Her hands are empty and
away from her body as she regards the intruder.

As the not-unexpected newcomer walks into the room, one of the
humans -- a male, wearing a green-dyed leather hauberk with black-dyed
cloth sleeves and leggings, and a brown, conical leather helmet that
peaks with a black horse-tail that cascades down the back of his head --
produces a strange looking, small bronze "hammer" from a sort-of pouch
on his belt, and points it (backwards; handle first) at the newcomer.
"Halt! Identify yourself!" the male human says, in a thickly -- and
strangely! -- accented Mannish.
This male warrior's skin is very pale, that of it that can be seen
on his oval face -- with it's cleft chin, and large, dark eyes that
dominate the face. He is about average height for humans, perhaps just
shy of six feet ((I know that the Kandar don't use "feet", so sue me!)),
but on the slender side, for his height.
Besides the armour, and the strange bronze "hammer", the man wears a
wide-bladed shortsword at his left hip, and a backpack.
"Are you controlled by the Kolder?" the young-looking human asks, in
his strange accent, as he takes a tighter grip of his 'hammer' and
pointing it in a threatening manner at the newcomer, "I said, Identify
yourself!"

[Jorg]

The newcomer is a giant human male, standing over seven feet tall and at
least three feet across the shoulders. Dressed from head to toe in plain
brown leather armor, he wields a huge sword in his right hand and carries an
equally enormous shield on the opposite side. He seems slightly stunned by
the motley crew assembled in the room, but his eyes are drawn to the man
behind the desk. Looking at the man, he says, "Sir, what is going on here?"

She almost laughs at the bard's comment. Instead she answers for the man at the
desk, "the man sitting, won't be answering you. We found him like this," she
adds quietly.

"So you live, Jorg", says a voice he recognises as belonging to the

He motions to the figure sitting motionless at the desk: Aranyr,
sitting serenely as if still alive.

There are two figures behind the desk.

Neither are Human, one is and one was Kandar.

The seated figure is dead.

The standing figure is dressed in a very ordinary brown tunic and trousers,
save for the way the sleeves are cut - which is odd but you can't quite put
your finger on the oddness.

As the stangers enter he is just picking up a metallic rod in his right
hand.

You might or might not know what it is - if you do know what a lightning
wand looks like then you also know that this Kandar must also be of the
Kazathran, for only they wield such things.

His left hand is tucked in the front of his tunic. You cannot see it.

[Dharak]
So, an Academy of the Mind rescue force, along with a couple of survivors.
That martial-sounding kandar appears to be in charge, but there are at
least a couple of humans, and they seem to be more or less equal partners
in the venture.

That's good enough. Dharak removes the bolt from his crossbow, uncocks it
as quietly as possible, and hooks the weapon on his belt. He draws his
walking stick from over his right shoulder.

He begins speaking before he steps across the threshold into the tower room.

"I don't know how much more information you require," Dharak announces,
speaking Mannish with hint of a Far Western accent. He steps into the
doorway and surveys the occupants of the room. "It's clear that whatever
assailant lay siege to your minds in the gatehouse was also responsible
for setting the residents at each other's throats."

He is human, of average height, clad in a reddish-brown cloak, olive drab
trousers, and a dull brown leather helmet, cuirass, and boots. All of his
gear looks a bit the worse for wear, and is dusty. His skin is medium brown
with a ruddy gold undertone. He smiles slightly through a neatly trimmed
black goatee; short black dreadlocks protrude from the back of his helmet.
His deep brown eyes shine with self-assurance. In his gloved right hand, he
holds a polished hardwood walking stick.

He glances at the (very TALL) human with the bloodstained sword. "I'm
sorry, brother, but I doubt that wizard will be able to conjure up a salve
for your conscience."

view of the world, unlike any I have ever experienced. It is very
powerful and able to control many individual minds. We were able to put
it to sleep, but how long it will stay asleep I can not say. I would
offer that we should find it and kill it soon before it has a chance to
wake up. If it gets away or controls some of us, there will be havoc
again." Her soft face shows the strain that she has suffered through
today and the last few days, clearly it has been work for her.

He raises an eyebrow at the woman. "A wise idea, sister. Is that why you
broke into the keep, to find this monster and dispatch it? Do you have any
idea where it might be in this castle?"

"I don't believe I caught your name, by the way -- or anyone else's, for
that matter."

"Well-met, big man," Dharak acknowledges Jorg, with a nod.

He scoffs a little at Jal's comment. "Brother Jaldaric, you find a noble
house in this world that will allow you and me through the front door
without a bucket and a mop in our hands, you let me know."

"Reylorna," he begins, stepping further into the room, toward her. (As he
walks, his moving cloak reveals a crossbow and quiver of bolts slung at the
small of his back, and a large knife on his belt.) "Clearly you, and likely
others in this company, are gifted wizards. You say you are all too
familiar with this thing's mind. Have you studied the discipline that would
allow you to locate that mind, ere it rouses from its slumber?"

He shakes his head. "My own abilities have only allowed me to sense its
presence in the places where it mentally attacked you. I really wouldn't
know where to start searching for this thing, or even what it looks like.
Do you have any idea whether it's within these walls, or somewhere outside?
I don't fancy a moonlight monster hunt through the woods, but I agree with
Reylorna: Press the advantage, kill it as it sleeps."

Dharak glances at the dead kandar seated at the table. If no one stops him,
he walks over to the open book at reads it.

He looks up from the book. "Well, it appears that this 'shaggy beast' was
still outside two days ago. And perhaps it is still recovering from its
wounds on that day."

Dharak glances at the human with the funny hat, at the scared-looking
kandar in leather armor, then at the grim kandar who looks every inch a
warrior. Probably not a knight, if he's in mixed company...

"Well, soldier?" he asks of the kandar he guesses to be a legionnaire.
"What do you think? There might yet be enough light to track this monster,
if there is a tracker among us."

"As long as you keep talking, Brother Jaldaric, we'll know you're free of
'pernicious influences.' I doubt this beast could simulate your droll wit."
He winks at the bard.

He turns again to Reylorna. "When you fought this thing, sister, did you
engage its mind directly, or did you battle within the mind of another? If
you were able to put it to sleep in direct combat, wouldn't it have to be
within range of your power -- and couldn't we narrow our search that way?"

"It was direct mental combat." She paused obviously thinking for a
moment before answering "yes, I believe you are correct, it would have
to be nearby. As to exactly how far, well I am not one hundred percent
sure. We did different drills for practice at the Academy, but I wasn't
completely consistant. I was just learning at the time."

She paused again before continuing "though I think we can safely say
within a couple of miles. Again I would think farily near the keep, it
could see the walls, I think."
