Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr - 35.3 : Ulsoghir Attack

[Reylorna]

She will attempt to defend herself, and maybe slip an attack in edgewise
if given the opportunity. Hopefully with the physical battle taken care
of, the others will join her in the mental battle. Though she can't say
anything, she must maintain her concentration. Sweat beads on the
strained forehead of the young apprentice.

Kalyr - 35.3 : Ulsoghir Attack

[Jorg]

Jorg straightens up in surprise, then calmly goes about cleaning his blade
on the hide of the ulsoghir.
"Was that it?" he asks.

[Ryzar]

Though the bull is down, Ryzar remains combat ready -- scanning the
surrounding area, in the growing dimness.
"That Kolderspawned Beast is somewhere near!" Ryzar hisses, scanning
the darkened treeline, where the Ulsoghir first appeared, "It is watching
us. I am sure of it! By the Eternal Flame, if only I could tell from
which direction this mental attack comes from!"
Ryzar continues to scan around, looking for any sign of movement, or
something that is "out of place".

Kalyr - 35.3 : Ulsoghir Attack

[Duplar]

As soon as Duplar realises what is happening he will lend Reylorna such
support as he can.

This will be limited, as he is not that hot at mental combat, but what he
will also try to do is track back to find where the attacking beast is.
Locating things is something he does much better at.

Kalyr - 35.3 : Ulsoghir Attack

[Dharak]
He grits his teeth against the mental onslaught of the creature. *You need
more of a boost than I can offer, sister* he mindspeaks to Reylorna.

"Big man," he says to Jorg through his taut lips. "You, Jaldaric, and Kylar
should keep an eye on the woods. The shaggy monster is already here in mind
attacking Reylorna, and might not be far away in body."

He turns a blazing ebon stare upon Verthes. "Unless you want to end up like
your friends, you'd best lend us your mind, mageguard."

Kalyr - 35.3 : Ulsoghir Attack

[Jaldaric]

# Blood and Martyrs! # curses Jal internally, shaking his head to clear it.
Shaken, he remains prone for a moment or two, although deep inside a tiny
voice squeaks.

 # Mud all over me. Ugh! #

Jal will probably be all right...

This time Jorg and Ryzar both have greater success, and both succeed
in injuring the beast. Jaldaric is not quite so lucky; his doesn't
manage to get near it's eyes, and is instead thrown off when the beast
rears up in pain from the two sword wounds it's suffered. He lands
heavily, and painfully.

Jorg narrowly avoids the beast's forward lunge.

Dharak and Duplar join Reylorna in the mental side of the battle. The
three of them are all aware of the mental presence of the alien
creature now; the bull-ulsoghir is nothing but it's unwilling puppet.

The dumb animal is trivially easy to send into bovine slumber; the
great creature closes it's eyes and keels over.

Without his inhumanly-fast reflexes, Jaldaric would have been crushed
under it's weight.

But the animal was never the real enemy. A crushing mental attack
comes straight at Reylorna; her mind-shield holds...just.

Kalyr - 35.3 : Ulsoghir Attack

[Jorg]

The giant tenses and begins scanning the woods. There is a grim set to his
face as he says, "You can count on me."

[Jaldaric]

"No," calls Jal, "I'm OK!"

He stands up and casts around for his sword, but, failing to spot it in the
confusion, draws his parrying dagger. No use at all against the grazer, but
if the real enemy shows up it'll be better than nothing.
