Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr - 35.4a: Battle of the Wills

[Reylorna, Duplar, Dharak]

Reylorna, Duplar, Dharak and Verthes link minds to make a defense
against the mental monster.

The mental blasts come one after another; It's trying to chip away at
the combined mental shield; sooner or later it will break through.

Reylorna's counterattack, even when boosted by the powers of the other
three isn't quite enough to break though the creature's own mind
shield.

But Duplar does get a fix on the thing - He thinks it's due north;
just level with the treeline.

>[Dharak]
>He grits his teeth against the mental onslaught of the creature. *You need
>more of a boost than I can offer, sister* he mindspeaks to Reylorna.
>
>"Big man," he says to Jorg through his taut lips. "You, Jaldaric, and Kylar
>should keep an eye on the woods. The shaggy monster is already here in mind
>attacking Reylorna, and might not be far away in body."
>
>He turns a blazing ebon stare upon Verthes. "Unless you want to end up like
>your friends, you'd best lend us your mind, mageguard."
>
>
>>[Jorg]
>>
>>Jorg straightens up in surprise, then calmly goes about cleaning his blade
>>on the hide of the ulsoghir.
>>"Was that it?" he asks.

Kalyr - 35.4a: Battle of the Wills

[Reylorna]

She will keep her defense active, and continue attacks against the
creature. She knows the futility, but hopefully, she can distract it
while the others find it. She will also take a little energy and step
towards the north. Hopefully the others will get the hint and look
towards the north.

[Duplar]

Not being absolultely sure as to compass directions, Duplar turns to face
North and points in the right direction.

"It's That way!" he shouts aloud, slowly and deliberatly.
"Right at the edge of the trees."

All through this he remains braced for psionic defence.
Once he is confident people have understood, or when his arm starts to ache,
he will start a slow walk to Reylorna.

[Ryzar]

'At last!' Ryzar rejoices, mentally, as he looks in the direction that
Duplar is pointing.
Taking a firm grip on his sword, Ryzar focuses himself upon the task ahead
-- to charge the beast, attack it, and kill it at any cost .
Setting his own Mindshield in place, Ryzar raises up his heavy shortsword.
"Est-ca-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-arp!" the young Borderer shouts his land's
battle cry, as he chargestowards the hidden beast.

OOC:
    Relevant numbers...
    Strong Will +2
    Mindshield Skill Level = 10
Tracking Skill Level = 10 (to spot the beast, as Ryzar charges forward)
    Sword Skill Level = 12

Kalyr - 35.4a: Battle of the Wills

[Dharak, Duplar, Reylorna]

The invisible battle continues; then mental concert controlled by
Reylorna batters at the creatures alien-feeling defenses; while each
of it's own attacks chips away a little more at the collective mental
shield.

It's a war of attrition; whoever's shield breaks last will be the
victor.

Then an expected attack does not come; it's as if the alien thing has
been distracted.

Kalyr - 35.4a: Battle of the Wills

[Dharak]
*Damn!* Dharak thinks. *It must have switched targets!*

"Look sharp!" he shouts aloud. "The monster is trying to control one of you
who doesn't have mental defenses!" He glances from Ryzar, to Kylar, to
Jorg, to Jal, looking for signs that they've been turned.

*Reylorna, it's up to you.* he communicates mentally. *Do we maintain a
direct attack on the monster, or do we try to force it out of the mind of
our comrade?*

[Reylorna]

She answers mentally. The only way I know to force it out would be to
put our friend to sleep, or it. Who is it?" If she knew that she could
personally end the threat, but of course it would weaken their numbers
as the creature has already planned.

With the creature's attention diverted elsewhere, Reylorna almost
breaks through it's mind shield. The shield is in tatters now,
offering little protection.

*Once more into the breach, my sister* Dharak exhorts. *It looks like it's
got either Jorg or Kylar, but if you cut the root, the limbs will wither.*

[Reylorna]

She continues to pound, hoping to slip the sleep attack through it's
tattered defenses. That would give them a respite, and a chance to
eliminate it.
