Some of you may have heard this news already. First, some history - Kalyr started out on message boards of Compuserve's RPGAMES forum, and then part of the game transferred to phoenyx.net when several players quit Compuserve at the same time. At the moment I still run several threads on the forum (6 players in 4 threads) Yesterday there was an announcement that the RPGAMES forum is to close in it's present form. RPGs will be allocated a single section in a free-for-all GAMERS forum, and there will be a new forum with the very unfortunate title of ADULT ROLEPLAYING, restricted to people aged 18 and over. I have to make a decision within the next week as to whether to transfer my Compuserve game to this new 'Adult' forum, or to move it across to this mailing list. It's not an easy decision to make; I've got seriously divided loyalties here. -- Tim Hall, timjh (at) compuserve.com * http://www.kalyr.com "Divide by cucumber error: Please reinstall universe and reboot"
>> ADULT ROLEPLAYING, restricted to people aged 18 and over. << I wasn't going to say anything in the TFH but there's nothing to prevent the younger members of RPGAMES lying their way into the SEXRPG forum, is there? (I always use the term "grown-up," that being the only term not yet co-opted by the mature/adult/XXX crowd. It sounds vaguely silly, but it generally gets the point across.) Has anyone pointed out to CIS that "adult roleplaying" has an entirely different connotation that what they (hopefully) meant? -- Karen J. Yes, but I don't think they're listening. Or if they are, they don't care. Whatever faceless suit that made the dumb decision isn't available for comment, and leaving the volunteer sysops to face the angry public. -- Tim Hall, timjh (at) compuserve.com * http://www.kalyr.com "Divide by cucumber error: Please reinstall universe and reboot"
Well, I will be in the ARPG forum, and I will probably check out the Gamers one as well. And as you know I play here. So whatever works for you, works for me. (I know, no help, but there it is...) -Sean

As you know, Tim, I dropped CompuStupid YEARS ago, because I I had, and knew others, who had run into just this sorta bureaucratic brain-fart. In my opinion -- and it IS just an opinion -- this bum's-rush you're getting from CompuStupid is a GOOD thing. Anyone in your games who has CompuStupid has (crummy) access to the Internet. This gives you THREE choices. One, you can choose to stick with CompuStupid, and place your games on one of their 2 Forums. Two, you can convert EVERY one of your games to PBEM. This works well for your players -- because even CompuStupid customers have email -- but I'm sure that it would generate an awful lot of work for you. Or THREE, you can set-up a CGI or CFM Message Board, and play your games on it. A Message Board is very much like a Forum (but there ARE a few minor differences). AND, there are even a few CGIBoard services out there that are FREE. I run a couple of CGIBoard based games, myself, and I think they're great! And, there're not even as hard as a Webpage to set up; really easy, actually. Email me, Tim, if you want more info on this possibility. If you're interested, I'll send you the URL of one of my Boards, so you can see what it's like, and check out how the Boards work. I'll even hook you up with a Server. My _only_ loyalty is to the large number of friends I've met there, who I would hate to lose contact with them if the community is broken up. > As you know, Tim, I dropped CompuStupid YEARS ago, because I I had, and >knew others, who had run into just this sorta bureaucratic brain-fart. > In my opinion -- and it IS just an opinion -- this bum's-rush you're >getting from CompuStupid is a GOOD thing. If we had more than a week's notice, we could have regrouped elsewhere on the net - but you can't do something on that scale in 7 days. Personally I think CompuServe's days are numbered anyway, and these two new forums represent a short-term stay of execution while the gaming community there finds a permenant home. > Anyone in your games who has CompuStupid has (crummy) access to the >Internet. I have suggested that, and it remains an option if things don't work out. Since the only game I currently run is set in Kalyr anyway, I could easily set up two sub-topics for this list. > Or THREE, you can set-up a CGI or CFM Message Board, and play your games >on it. Guess how I feel? I bailed out of CompuSpend 2 years ago, but went back last week because I needed a personal email and missed the Forum. Four days later they pull the rug... >> Email me, Tim, if you want more info on this possibility. Web-based gaming will clock up mammoth phone bills > in no time at all. > Yes, I agree -- AOL is the Anti-Christ Incarnate ^_^ I honestly don't believe that using a Message Board uses any more time than using a Forum Board. Just like with the Forum Boards, you can go to the Message Board, find the most recent/newest Posts, open it, copy the contents to a TXT/DOC file, and get off-line. Then, you can read the Post at your leisure, write up any response in an off-line TXT/DOC, then go back to the Message Board, and copy-cut-and-paste your new stuff in, submit it, and you're done. Below, I've pasted the URL for one of my games -- The Morrow Project (sorry guys, the game is currently full). But, you're welcome to zip over and check it out. Open Posts, read the contents, and the Followups. See how a Message Board works. I think that it might not be as bad as you think it is. Like the Forum Boards, it's not "real time" -- you don't HAVE to spend a lot of time on the phone. I think... ^_^ http://users3.cgiforme.com/MorrowProject/cfmboard.html (Sorry, I don't know how to make this a hyperlink -- you're just gonna have to do it the old fashioned way) _______________________________________________________ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freelane.excite.com/freeisp

Also, has anyone looked to see if AOL has closed _any_ of _its'_ forums, or SIGS, or whatever the hell they are?
