Up at the top of the tower, Jaldaric's voice, crying "Hello" echoes up the stairs, from somewhere down below. "We're up in the chapel", Verthes shouts down the stairs, which Jal hears. Moments later Jal enters the chapel followed by a tall, aristocratic but somewhat dishevelled kandar. "Ulkarlyn, you live!", cries Verthes, seeing the man following Jal. "Indeed, reports of my death are exaggerated", the newcomer replies. -- Tim Hall - http://www.kalyr.com - ICQ# 74213108 "It's a fine line between clever and stupid" - Spinal Tap
[Reylorna] She recognized the man's name. Ulkarlyn, do you know who might have the key to the inner door there?" She points with her right hand. "We are trying to find a device that we believe the master of the castle had. It would allow us to let the Academy in Calyben know what has happened here." --Pandemonium
Ulkarlyn stops to think for a moment. "Now what might that be, I wonder?". His eyes glance around the assortment of faces in the room. "You are the people the academy sent? I recognise the two of you, vaguely", he says, indicating Reylorna and Duplar as those he recognises. Reylorna has seen Ulkarlyn before, probably at one of the temples in Calbeyn, or at the Academy of the Mind. "Yes, I was right", he says, standing in the doorway. He emerges a few moments later carrying a featureless grey cylinder a little smaller than a human's head. "It looks like a metal bucket." Ryzar finally offers, "How's that going to help? You yell into it, and it amplifies your voice?" Duplar's words about mental overloads strike a chord with Jal. He remembers the scene in the Citadel with 'the device'; how an augmented mental interrogation killed the suspect and put the interrogator in a coma. There are no visible switches or controls on the focusser; as far as Duplar can tell, it focussed by mind-power entirely. Ulkarlyn hands the object to Duplar without ceremony, except to say "Do not drop it". It's surprisingly heavy as it settles into Duplar's hands; even without consciously 'reading' it, it's got strong associations with some of the Calbeyn wizards he's familiar with, notably Runaka and Alnate. -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com "It's a fine line between stupid and clever" - Spinal Tap

[Reylorna] She answers in a soft voice, with a bit of a downward turn to her mouth, "while I appreciate your concern, Duplar has a great deal more experience with this type of device. [OOC] I was somewhat hoping Tim would provide a description of the furniture in the area. Ah well, perhaps such will appear... [Duplar] Settling himself as comfortably as he can, Duplar reflects on who he should attempt to communicate with. Runaka seems the best choice, she seems to have the better disposition towards their situation. Ensuring he is in a respectful frame of mind, he invokes the focusser and send a tendril of thought towards the Accademy at Calbeyn.
Duplar appears to go into a trance, his face blank and featureless, eyes staring into space. Only his regular breathing makes it plain that he's not dead. Duplar has used a lower powered focusser before; this one is quite different. He now realises that this one is very ancient, hundreds if not thousands of years old. It's probable that the secret of their making has been lost, along with so much other knowledge. He finds it's highly directional, and it takes some effort to focus his tendril of thought in the right direction. Eventually he manages it, and locates his chosen contact, Runaka. When he initially makes contact, the old woman does not respond; after a moment Duplar realises that she had been asleep, and his repeated attempts had woken her up. Initially she doesn't recognise him in the confusion of the just awaken, and is about to scold him for disturbing her sleep. Then she realises who it is. *Duplar*, she responds, *from a distance Have you reached the retreat?* -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com "It's a fine line between stupid and clever" - Spinal Tap

My world, just like this one -- if it is, indeed, a different one than my own -- also has many ancient, forgotten Gates to other places; made, and left behind, by the Old Ones. "You see, the Kolder are Masters of Machinery. They create such things as ships that run without benefit of sail, and that can submerge beneath the seas. They build a kind of kite that is large enough, and powerful enough, to lift a man into the skies. And, most insidious of all, they have machines that can impose their mechanical will upon another person's mind -- even machines that can replace the mind of a man; turning his body into a willing, and lifeless, slave. "The Kolder's dark machines can project thoughts, and will, over great distances. Only the people of my race, the people called The Old Race, have a natural resistance to this perverse form of mind manipulation. This was why the Kolder saw Estcarp -- with it's majority population of Old Race citizens, as such a threat to them. And why they subourned Estcarp's neighbors -- Karsten to the south, and Alizon to the north -- into the recent wars with us." _______________________________________________________ Say Bye to Slow Internet! http://www.home.com/xinbox/signup.html

There I met up with a boyhood friend, who -- when I came visiting -- helped me to read many of the ancient texts. "It was in those texts that I found the seed of my exile. We in Estcarp are taught from earliest childhood that Power can only be weilded by Women; and so the Council of Witches has led us wisely for many generations. But, just before I was born, the famous Outlander, Simon Tregarth, came to Estcarp through a Gate. He met and married a Witch. And their children -- two of whom are males -- all could weild Power. And, in the ancient texts of Lormt, I found many references to males also being able to weild Power. "I asked questions about this, with the scholars of Lormt. I publicly questioned the truth that only Women can be Witches." Ryzar turns towards Reylorna, and makes a small bow of his head, "I serve the Council of Witches, and I have no dobt that Women weild Power most effectively, but I was too vocal in my questing for WHY it was that, in Estcarp, it was almost an unwritten law to even speak of the possibilty that a Man could weild power. "My friend heard that I was to be arrested, and brought before the Council as a spreader of heresy, and a rabble rouser -- both charges untrue! But, fearing that my fate had already been decided, my friend convinced me to let him attempt to open a nearby Gate that he had found. He convinced me that it would be better to take my chances in some new place, than face a certain censure, maybe even death, at home in Estcarp." "And that is how I came to be here.
