Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr 49 - On the trail

With the legionnaire Kylar leading the way, six travellers set out
from the castle. The trail is sufficiently well-worn to indicate that
quite a few people have travelled this route in recent weeks, winding
though rolling hills with patches of woodland. Being springtime, the
flowers are just starting to appear.

Sadly the weather isn't perfect. The leaden sky when they set out
produced the expected slow but steady drizzle, and the wind is coming
from the north, making it cold and not terribly pleasant for all
concerned. [*1]

Earlier, Verthes the mageguard and Jorg the mercenary had elected to
remain in the castle to form a some semblance of a defense force to
protect the surviving non-combatants. From snatches of conversation
Dharak overheard, it appeared that the pregnant teenage girl who had
been hiding in the hayloft is the actually daughter of someone very
important.

At what might have been noon if the sun had been visible, Kylar
notices something.

"I don't like the look of this", he says, "I haven't seen anything
remotely like this before, but it's an evil sight. Another dark
creature of theirs?".

He points to a man-sized bundle lying on the ground.

"Do those Kolder of yours do anything like this?".

It's not a man, but an animal; a glandrin. [*2] It's been wrapped in
silk, just like an insect caught by a spider.

[*1][Some players may realise where your GM is actually living ]

[*2][About the size of a deer]

<< From snatches of conversation

[Hmn, does this mean the the dim players failed to spot an interesting bit
of the plot?]

<< Sadly the weather isn't perfect. The leaden sky when they set out

Jaldaric is a picture of misery in weather like this. Huddled in his
thickest cloak and with his wide-brimmed hat pulled low, he tries his best
to avoid the rain. Of course, this misty drizzle [1] is impossible to keep
out for long, and he's not a happy bard.

<< "Do those Kolder of yours do anything like this?".

Something to take his mind off his discomfort is a great relief to
Jaldaric. He peers at the glandrin [I take it it /is/ dead?], then turns
his head to Ryzar to hear his reply.

[1 This player in particular has lived all his life in't drizzly, grey,
cold but-what-the-hell-it's-home Manchester area.]

[Dharak]
His loaded crossbow in his right hand, Dharak walks deliberately up to the form.
Once he is about a foot away from it, he reaches out to the animal with his
awareness, looking for impressions of the creature or device that brought it to
this state.

It seems to Dharak that the poor animal has been paralysed by a
poisonous bite. There is a vague hint of alienness about it, akin to
that which surrounded the victims of the monster so recently defeated
at the castle..

The animal is paralysed but still fully-conscious. It's completely
terrified; Reylorna can't see beneath the surface terror, but there is
not trace of anything else psychic around.

The *%*^(*)(&# Intrepid Tracker is/has been getting screwed by the 21st
Century. As is usual for him ^_^
I recently bought a shiney new computer -- right up there at the very
cutting edge, and everything! THEN, last Tuesday, I took the next logical
step, I got high speed DSL from my local phone company.
It worked flawlessly THAT DAY -- however, when I came home later that
night, it started acting all quirky. Sometimes I can get on it, sometimes I
can't. I called Customer Service -- a repair man (that I have to PAY FOR!)
will be coming over on the 10th. If he's not too busy.
*sigh*. Hopefully, if I keep hitting this module enough times with a
ballpeen hammer, it'll start working properly.
   And yes, I'm kidding ^_^
   Okay, time to get BIC:

[Ryzar]

The young Borderer does not, at first, ackowledge the question asked of
him -- he has just realized what it is he is staring at.
"Yes, actually, I do see something..." Ryzar responds in a quiet voice,
as he leisurely reaches to his belt holster, and unties the leather flap
that covers his dartgun.
"Look here..." Ryzar says, pulling the bronze weapon from its holster,
then carefully moving to where he can squat down near one of the
"too-many-legged" creature's tracks, "See? Here, and here, and here? And
over there, and there? I don't think these tracks were made by any number
of creatures. I think that theey were made by a single creature -- one with
far too many legs."
Ryzar hops into the center area, between the sets of treacks, and holds
out his hands, slowly spinning, until he's facing the dense copse of trees
that he believes the trail leads to.
"Too many legs, and far too large for my liking." Ryzar adds, "It went
that way...." Ryzar points, with his dartgun, towards the trees, "And, from
it's size, I don't think that it's finished feeding."

The webbing is sticky, but cuts easily enough. But the stickiness
means Reylorna's hands are tangled up in it pretty quickly. And the

If she were the type to swear, now would be a time for it. She works
diligently at cutting the webbing, but frowns at it sticking to her hands

to spot a water source nearby so that she can clean up. She won't wander

"I suppose so," mutters Jal, "but it seems ignoble to leave such a fell

Jal flashes a tight but grateful grin at Dharak for that. He undertands, he
thinks. Life must be heroic, or why bother? But the logic of the more
experienced warriors in the group is inescapable. This is one heroic deed
that will remain undone.

"So be it," he assents.

"Right, then. Onward we go." Ryzar agrees with the consensus, "But,
though we are but a single day upon this journey, should we pass up this
opportunity to expand our larder?"
Ryzar points at the near dead beastie that Reylorna has freed from the
webbing, "That's a fine looking game animal, there, and it's already near
death...." Ryzar hints, "And, I'd rather deprive the creature that captured
it of IT'S sustenenance."
"That," Ryzar says, unconsciously smacking his lips, "And I've a mind for
fresh roasted meat, tonight, rather than our standard trail fare." the young
Borderer finishes with a grin.

"Won't it have been poisoned, though, if it's a trapper-beastie?" asks
Jaldaric.

"As much as it might be nice to have a different kind of a meal, I didn't
spend this time getting covered in webbing, just to have it get eaten by us.
Don't any of you feel any compassion for this scared animal?" She looked
around offering reproach for their words and thoughts.

"It is poisioned it may recover. I say give it that chance. Leave it here,
lets go, and we will have less risk for ourselves. Right now, I need a
stream, unless one of you wants to voluteer to wipe my hands for me." She
gives them a mischevious grin, holding up her hands covered in the sticky
webbing.

[Correct, no horses, or sheep, or cows. But many smaller animals,
like rats, mice and rabbits do exist, as do most spiders and insects]

Kylar, "Let's get moving. Leave the thing here; your spider can come

"Any poison is in the blood, and I'd, of course, bleed the creature
before I dressed the carcass. Roasting would, I should think, breakdown any
remaining traces of poison in the meat..."
Ryzar shrugs, as the general consensus shies away from eating the
probably doomed creature.
"Very well." Ryzar says, joining the group in moving away, "I just
thought that we could save some time hunting, later, to extend our supplies.
But, you're probably right -- if we leave this creature here -- the beast
that origionally attacked it will probably spend time re-capturing it. And
that will give us that much more time to get away from here."

Jal makes no comment, but he is rather relived. The idea of eating some
beast that's been poisoned doesn't appeal to his fastidious nature. He
resumes the trail with some relief.

Ryzar does notice something - as well as the tracks of the unfortunate
glandrin, there are the footprints of something else; quite a large
creature with far too many legs, heading towards a denser thicket of
trees.

How big is a Glandrin?

Can we make a travois and pick the poor perisher up and move it somewhere
safe we can unwrap it at leisure?
