Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr 61 - The Dragon Tavern, Calbeyn

[Apologies for the long gap - Real Life a bit hectic]

"You show us respect, worm", says one of the knights to Gerryn as he
bows, "That is good. Always remember who your masters are".

"Leave the human alone, Thar", says the other, "We're late as it is".
The two of them hurry on, ignoring Zul. Probably for the better.

Both Gerryn and Zul pass through Aldor square to reach the Dragon
tavern at about the same time. Aldor square is quite busy with a lot
of traders selling their wares, with a smell of cooking sausages
wafting across from one stall.

A bored-looking bouncer on the door of the tavern pays them no
attention. Inside it's dark, and about half full; mostly human but
the odd kandar, in particular that fellow with the knife-throwing act.

Rotemdol's story leaves his two companions relatively speechless. He
glances up briefly to notice a couple of humans entering. [Matching

Gerryn maintains his bow as he slowly backs away. "Of course great sirs.
Always great sirs."

Twitchy from being on the run, Gerryn's nerves scream into overdrive as
he and Zul enter the tavern more-or-less together. He'd noticed her
during his encounter with the knights and only the fact that she doesn't
seem the type that his hunters would hire keeps him from passing
straight through the tavern and out the back door. Nevertheless, he
tries to keep his anxiety about the brown-haired woman to himself as he
pauses to scan the public room for people who might be working for his
hunters, prepared to bolt at a moment's notice.

Making his way to the bar, he orders (and pays for) a drink of
whatever's cheapest. He then tries to discuss what sort of food the
tavern has available. All the time he keeps his eyes and ears open, both
for potential hunters, and a point of contact with The Dragon.

The barman pours a mug of the local ale. The tavern has a selection
of bread, cheeses and cold meats, but nothing hot, although Gerryn
notices several people are eating food purchased from vendors in the
square outside; nobody seems to mind.

Nobody apart from the kandar with that knife-throwing act seems to be
paying him any attention. He realises he has no description of Ayras

Soraya isn't supposed show for another couple of hours, so Zul decides she
should have little bite with her ale -- and have a little fun with her shadow.
Hardly looks like muscle, Zul thinks, but he could be a spotter. One way to find
out.

She strides up to the bar, pulls up a stool next to Gerryn, and slaps down a few
coins next to his ale. "I got this, and how 'bout a loaf and lager for the
little lady, huh?" she queries the barman.

Flipping her brown locks over her shoulder, she gives the young man a frank gaze
and a carnivorous smile.

"How's it hangin'?" she asks in a brusque accent that fairly screams "West Side
of Filgeth."

Gerryn responds with a trapped look and a mumble, "Uh, 'sokay. I guess."

In the meantime, he's looks around the place and remembers the outside,
trying to figure out a place where he can settle and "relax" completely
without being disturbed.

"Aw, don't be shy, kid," she chides. "Why so twitchy? I don't bite. Well,
not unless properly motivated," she adds with a wink as she takes a pull on
her beer.

"I'm Zul, by the way -- in case you didn't already know that. Anyway, I
plan on kicking back here for the evening, so if there's anyone you're
supposed to be telling where I am, or what I'm doing, you can just let 'em
know that I'll be right here, watchin' the show, and doing this." He raises
her mug and touches it to his, then takes another swig.

She nods over at the black-clad kandar at the end of the bar. "That must be
the talent." She gives the kandar a long look, as if sizing him up. "They
say he puts on a good show. Wonder if he actually knows how to scrap." She
shrugs.

She regards Rotemdol impassively. "Well..." she begins, "I guess you could say
I've put on a show or two around town." She takes a sip of her beer to hide a
smirk. "Yeah, this one time, at the Vordral's Head, I really had 'em rolling in
the aisles." A tiny grunt escapes her nose, as if she's suppressing a guffaw.

"So you're knife-boy, huh?" She thumps her mug down on the bar and elbows the
boy next to her. "Yo, Twitchy, check it out, we got a celebrity sighting over
here!" Zul grins a bit, then looks back at Rotemdol, cocking her head almost
defiantly. "Look forward to seeing what you got," she says slowly. "But I gotta
tell ya, seems to me like your best trick is dragging your scrawny kandar ass
around holes like this without getting your throat cut."

[Nottn = slurred "not in"]
[m'pen = my pen, pen having a meaning similar to "crib," "scene," or "place."]
[bits bright = it's a bit bright, bright being wealthy or "upscale." Can
also mean "flashy."]
[Up = Intelligence or understanding, as a question "Do you understand?" "Get

[t'stop = to stop]
[polishin' t'street = polishing the street, walking around, implies
unemployment, or at least very little worthwhile to do.]
[Finger = hold to to something a little while before using it or losing it.]
[a few glitters = some small coins]
[, me = placing pronouns as the final word to modify an entire sentence is
common in Anthill slang.]
[Off'n t'Anthill = roughly, "My Anthill, somewhere else."]
[star and sky = infinity, forever, or a least a very long distance or period.]

[Thus, "Off'n t'Anthill, no star and sky back" means, roughly, "I've left (my
place in) the Anthill and I'm not going back" or "I can't go back."]

Gerryn starts to give her the false name he'd decided on, but something
in her look stops him. "J, G, Gerryn." he gets out past a lump in his
throat.

"T'Anthills gone freezin' t'me. Up that. C'n brighten up, but needin' a

rest of his appearance, and speaks very quietly. "C'd mean brightwork,

Surprisingly, Rotemdol has a volunteer today, a gangling scruffy human
youth, somewhat worse for drink, with a group of equally inebriated

After asking the youth name - Sheizaf - Rotemdol tells him " This part is
simple, you just stand here next to that board, now pay attention, it is
very important that you do not, repeat do not move". Rotemdol will
continue to throw knifes all around him. If he has loose cloth he may pin
the cloth in a few place. Rotemdol does not try to hit less than two inches
from Sheizaf as I do not trust him not to move.

Then the normal show continues (unless something else happens)

Kalyr 61 - The Dragon Tavern, Calbeyn

She's only watching the show out of the corner of her eye, keeping
most of her attention on watching her client.

[Gerryn]

Even though he's not earning any money, Gerryn isn't going to let chance of a
doss pad escape. He needs a place where he can settle and people won't look
for him. He continues to nurse his ale and watch the show, keeping an eye on
Zul with another eye out for anyone who might be looking for him.
