[Dharak] The teacher suppresses a smile. "Guess you might have been onto something, brother," he says to Ryzar in a low voice. "If I heard this thing correctly, it says that kandar and Kolder are the same thing -- and he thinks you're one, too." ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: Kalyr 69 - The Orange Prisoner [OOC] Author:Date: 02/08/2002 7:28 AM > Who can hear the conversation between the > Quaan and his interrogators, and who can't? [Reposted] [Ryzar] Ryzar scans the blue-lit chamber from where the guards had come, looking for more approaching enemies -- as well as to get an impression of the general layout of the chamber, and what might be going on inside it. At Dharak's quiet comment, Ryzar looks over at his companion with a puzzled expression. "He thinks I look like a Kolder?" Ryzar asks, stunned, "And that I also look like a Kandar? Hmmm..." Ryzar's stunned expression changes to a thoughtful frown. "Truth be told, I've been mistaken as a Kandar before." Ryzar says, as he looks back over his shoulder at the group of his companions, "What puzzles me about that is, to my eye, I don't see any significant difference between a Human and a Kandar. Only the Kandar seem to be able to see these differences that they say separates their race from ours. "I mean, all the tales I've been told of them, even the Kolder are thought to be Men -- Humans, that is. They just have a slightly different appearance, just as any peoples from a distant land will have a different appearance. The Sulcar sailors are mostly red-haired and broad shouldered, the Alizonders are mostly blonde-haired and fair skinned. My own people, the Old Race, are slim and dark-haired, marked by our dark eyes..." Ryzar points at his own ebony irises, "...but despite looking 'different' from each other, we all acknowledge that we are 'Human'. "Kandar, to me, look just as 'human' as you do, friend Dharak. It's not like they have feathers, or the ears of a hound, or the teeth of a shark. They just look...human...to me. The Kolder, now, even they must be some form of human people, if the tales be true. They are a slim people, like my own Old Race, but they are also said to be a bit on the tall side. They have little to no hair upon their bodies -- but I've never heard tell whether this was the norm for them, or if they prefered to shave it all off. And their noses are said to be a little small for their faces. In their own lairs they wear strange clothing that clings tightly to their bodies. "The common Kolder is cunning and dangerous, full of tricks and surprises. But their Leaders are the ones that are the most dangerous! While the Kolder are most likely human, they are also masters of arcane machines -- they have machines that do almost everything for them, and their machines of war are most diabolical. The Kolder Leaders are, somehow, tied into their machines. According to the tales, a Kolder leader spends his time seated in a throne, wearing a crown which, somehow, 'connects' him to almost every machine within his realm. With the merest thought, he can issue commands, make adjustments, and activate to furthest, most remote Kolder machines at his command. And recieve information back from those machines, though they be miles away! "Also, the Kolder have machines that can impose their will upon another, taking control of their minds. And, most horrible of all, they have machines that they _replace_ the mind of a person with, making that person little more than a puppet under the mental command of their Leaders. [Dharak] "Our people and the kandar certainly have more similarities than differences, but we are in fact distinct species," Dharak relates (in his lecturing tone). "Not a whole lot of unbiased science has been conducted on this topic, but this fact is indisputable: Though kandar and humans are sexually compatible, and have been known to produce children, such offspring are always sterile." >The Kolder, now, even they must be some form of human people, if the tales >be true. "This creature might have erred in your case, brother, but he sounds correct in a broader sense," Dharak continues. "The kolder technology you describe very likely would have been within the ken of First Empire kandar -- and still available to the Guardians, I'll bet." "So, Duplar, do you think we should check out this technology right now, or make a retreat? Don't seem to be any more guards -- yet. Though I'm thinking this whole tunnel could fill up with vordral any minute now."

"Reylorna is right", Kylar the Legionnaire says, "We cannot abandon our mission now; for all we know those four guards are all there were, though I doubt it. [Dharak] He screws up his face in annoyance. "We're just talkin' over here, Sarge," he snaps. "Jal and Reylorna are doing just fine with the interrogation. Keep your pants on."
[Dupalr] "Facinating though I find those devices, I'm part of Guild Security rather than Research and Development. "Now we know there is something really worth bringing a team of specialists here, my job is to secure the area and get the information home. The Guild will be back, and I'd guess in significant numbers. "But we can't risk bringing in those experts until this place is safe, and that means we need to know just what the threat posed by these prisoners, be they Kolder or other enemies of the Kolder who think we are the Kolder and therefore their enemies. The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend. "As you have probably guessed by now, I'm not only a member of the Guild but also of the Academy. My mental powers are somewhat unusual in that I need to touch my target to use my major powers or hold something closely associated with my target to find him or her. "We have nothing like THE DEVICE with us, so a trained mind may resist me, but I will try the minds of these beings. Direct mental contact deals in the symbols and images which underlay language. I might or might not understand those symbols, but I should at least be able to get something." Duplar will appoach the prisoners with the intention of interrogating one as he would back at the Guild.
>Duplar will appoach the prisoners with the intention of interrogating one as >he would back at the Guild. [Dharak] "How's your Konaic?" Dharak asks Duplar. Through Duplar's Way of Vision, the weapons carried by the orange prisoners show a twisting of space and time, giving him the impression that they're not from Kalyr. [GM]The two wizards link minds. Their mental probe is first repulsed by the creatures mind-shield, but a second, draining attempt manages to break through. The creature is frightened, and there's a sense of betrayal; Neither Duplar not Reylorna can make sense of it's mental thoughts and subvocalisations; they're in a language neither know, and so alien it can't be a kalyr language. There are images flashing past, other beings more alien than this orange creature; a creature who's head is a mass of writhing tentacles, like a dry-land version of a glethnu, and another that's no more than a shapeless blob. -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com "It's a fine line between stupid and clever" - Spinal Tap

Ryzar agrees with the big man's attitude, yet Ryzar still looks towards reylorns, before acting.

Ryzar pauses to await the Witch's answer; his demeanor is not one of any kind of "personal vassal" towards Reylorna -- it is more like he just expects her to "know" the correct course of action. "We press on, I think", Reylorna replies. "Use your powers of the mind to keep in touch with them", Kylar suggests, "Will avoid shouting across the cave, and attracting the attention of any more of them". Dharak, in a semi-crouch, begins stealing toward the source of the blue glow, followed by Jal. Dharak merges into the shadows as he creeps forward, but Jal is rather more visible as they approach the blue-lit machinery. Dharak, in a semi-crouch, begins stealing toward the source of the blue glow, followed by Jal. They approach the blue-lit machinery. A great number of boxes and machines are scattered around the chamber, linked by heavy cables. The most prominent is a large arch-shaped device, far taller and wider than a man made of a dull, grey metal. A great many of the heavy black cables converge on it's base. Then the sound of footprints can be heard from a side passage. -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com "It's a fine line between stupid and clever" - Spinal Tap
The two wizards link minds. Reylorna sits back uncomfortably upon the ground. Her white robe splays a bit she seems unconcerned. The furrowing of her brow highlights the sweat that trickles down. "We got through, though it was difficult. I am not sure that we learned anyting particularly useful. I will have to defer to Duplar's expertise as to the extent of what we have figured out. But here are some of the images we discovered. It speaks a truely alien language, nothing like I have ever experienced. It seems to feel like it has been betrayed, though I can't tell by who or what. I saw a creature that was like a dry-land version of a glethnu with a head that was a mass of writhing tenticles, and another that was a shapeless blob." She paused to take a deep breath and sip from her water bag. "Gleth-noo." Ryzar tries the alien word, "That creature that attacked your Guild, my Lady, back in the city. Did I not hear your scholars say that that beast, too, looked -- how did you say it? -- 'like a dry-land glethnu'? Perhaps the -- person -- there, knows summat of the attack on your Guild by that creature. If it -- he? -- has an image of such, so strongly in it's mind." "Yes it did look something like that." She remembers the chaos of the moment and tries to get clearer picture of what she had seen in the aftermath of the attack on the Karazthan. "I can remember a mass of leathery tentacles", Reylorna says, "there was a maw with teeth; I couldn't see the the body of the creature, it was hidden inside the ruined lift-shaft. That creature was huge; the image I just saw in the orange being's mind is closer to something not much larger than man-sized". The memories of this terrible creature come flooding back to Duplar, Ryzar, Jaldaric. -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com "It's a fine line between stupid and clever" - Spinal Tap
