Reylorna wanted to comfort him, tell him there was nothing to fear, but after what she had just done that might not be true. She tried influencing the man with an image of the mirror without the shimmering field. There is an image in the man's mind of the terrifying creature that had attacked the Karazthan, all tentacles and teeth; it hangs in space, then vanishes. "Can any of you folk read Old Kandar?", Duplar asks, "It seems to me that long long ago we shared a language with these folk. But then they went their way and we went ours." "Some of this kit is new and it hasn't come out of any Guild workshop I know of. We could have built the controls themselves, but what they control is so far beyond me I am not sure I even know the right questions". Leaving the wounded Kylar to Ryzar's ministrations, the teacher strides over to their prisoner. He looks the man in the eye; Dharak doesn't need his empathic sense to tell him the fellow is terrified. "Your companions are slain," he ventures in Konaic. "And hope not for help from the kandar or Quaan guards," he adds, pulling out the energy pistol he took from one of the catmen. "Turn off that machine, brother, and you can walk out of here with your life." He complements his steely gaze and threatening words with a mindspoken suggestion that the man comply with his demand. The man is now more terrified than before; the blue button marked "Yuruvu U*toi" briefly flickers in his mind. His mind is drawn towards the shimmering with a thought towards escaping. -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com Read my blog! http://www.kalyr.com/blogger.shtml

[OOC]
Ryzar is tending to Kylar. I'd send a roll for his use of his Healing Power, but I've forgotten how to make the system generate numbers! I'm a bad member, I know ^_^ I'm sorry.

Reylorna She seperates herself enough from the man's mind to offer "he is very scared and wants to escape using the mirror. When prompted about shutting it down, I saw a blue button marked with something that looked like 'Yuruvu U*toi'. "In answer to your question, I do read Old Kandar reasonably well. That is where I learned of the possibility of the mirrors." She turns to move towards where Duplar is standing to help translate and maybe shut down the gate. --Pandemonium
Ryzar tends to Kylar, who's grimly clinging on to life. Ryzar thinks he's going to live, but it's going to be a long time for him to fully recover. "Thanks!" Duplar continues his scan for a blue hexagonal button. [Does he find one?] "Erm, one tiny question, what is your best translation of 'Yuruvu U*toi'?" [Reylorna] "I can't really translate it. I know how to read the language but we don't usually think in the written word. Usually we just have thoughts in our own voices, or in pictures." She will help him look though sounding out the words and trying to find them using her linguistic skill. --Pandemonium > -----Original Message----- > From: kalyr-error@phoenyx.net [mailto:kalyr-error@phoenyx.net]On Behalf > Of Michael Orton > Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2002 6:28 PM > To: kalyr@phoenyx.net > Subject: Re: Kalyr: 76d - After the Battle > > >> > "Thanks!" > > Duplar continues his scan for a blue hexagonal button. > [Does he find one?] > > "Erm, one tiny question, what is your best translation of 'Yuruvu U*toi'?" > > > [OOC: www.villainsupply.com is worth several giggles if you ever wanted to > know how the secret underground complex in the gratuitous exotic location > came to be there. [RYZAR]
The young Borderer finishes his ministrations to the injured Legionairre, then looks up at the group.
"Kylar is in bad shape." Ryzar calls out, "Very Bad shape. He needs more attention than he can get here, but I don't think he'll survive even the short trip back to that human village -- whatever-it-was-called. I don't suppose we could make some use of this...mirror thing, could we?" Ryzar waves a hand at the glowing portal, "Maybe command it to return us to the Karazthan Guild, or even some nearby Legion post? Make the Kolder-Lover, there, reveal how to direct the device." Ryzar points at the human prisoner.
Ryzar scowls at their human prisoner, "If it will help, I'll be the first to beat on him! Kylar is my friend, and if THIS weasle can help us get him aid, then I don't mind busting HIM up to do it!"

Kylar is my friend, and if THIS weasle can help us get him aid, then I don't mind busting HIM up to do it!" [Duplar] "Well we know this device, or something like it, can put a tentacled monster in the guild lift shaft. But which setting among all these possibilities?" Duplar takes a deep breath. He really doesn't like talking about his real job of preserving the guild's secrets without making enemies by killing people who learn to much. Yet the situation is too serious to not use all the resources the party has - and that means his. "Ryzar, beating information out of people can be very satisfying but seldom gets the information we need. On the otherhand, if we can render him unconscious, his memories are mine to play with. My powers are nowhere near as potent as Tanala's: a conscious mind can easily resist me. But touching an unconscious target, I can do a lot. Of course, that doesn't mean I'll understand what I find there, and whatever you do, don't let him die while I'm inside."
"Hmm, blue button, 'Yuruvu U*toi'.... well that's a good start", says Duplar to himself. He scans the keyboards and controls for blue buttons "You wouldn't happen to have a shape, size or orientation to go with that would you?" he asks, somewhat preoccupied with his search. "Perceptions can be different when you are in someone else's mind", Reylorna replies, but I believe it was hexagonal". "Thanks!", says Duplar, scanning for a blue hexagonal button, which he finds on the left-hand side of the panel. "Erm, one tiny question, what is your best translation of 'Yuruvu U*toi'?" "I can't really translate it", says Reylorna, "I know how to read the language but we don't usually think in the written word. Usually we just have thoughts in our own voices, or in pictures." The inscription on the blue six-sided button is in an unknown script, not Old Kandar, or any language either Duplar or Reylorna are familiar with. Meanwhile the young Borderer Ryzar finishes his ministrations to the injured Legionnaire, then looks up at the group. "Kylar is in bad shape." he calls out, "Very bad shape. [Reylorna] As much as the equipment is interesting to her, she is more interested in watching the vortex. How it comes into being, what it looks like, all the aspects of it. The chance to actually see an actual mirror in operation is too exciting to just ignore. She would like to shut it down for their own safety. But there is no guarrantee that they could get it running again afterwards. So this may very well be the one opportunity in her life. She had read and reread the old texts so many times, that this is almost like a myth becoming reality right before her. For the moment she remains silent in awe. --Pandemonium

"Reylorna couldn't get anything more; unless you really think you can do better within the next ten seconds or so, then just push the button, Frank." His face is impassive. He offers no explanation as to why he just called Duplar "Frank."

Concluding there is no time for more investigation. Duplar presses the button.
[Reylorna] She immediately attempts to protect her mind from intrusion while wondering if Duplar is too late.
