Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr: 78 - The Mirror!

Concluding there is no time for more investigation, Duplar presses the
button.

Reylorna immediately attempts to protect her mind from intrusion while
wondering if Duplar is too late.

The throbbing doesn't stop, but increases; the shimmering area becomes
a vortex, which begins pulsing violently. There appears to be a the
outline of a man standing within the vortex, growing larger and
larger.

Then a man staggers out of the vortex into the chamber.

The man looks human, and appears to be in his early thirties, with tanned
skin and no facial hair. He's wearing a tan coloured hat with a very wide
brim, at least three or four finger widths, and pants and a jacket made of
a faded and worn woven blue cloth, seams and even rivets holding on
several pockets. He has a belt with a wide metal buckle with some kind of
writing on it, and he's wearing a shirt under his jacket that is a darker
blue divided into squares by fine white lines. The shirt buttons are
white and pearlescent. His boots are high, only about a handwidth below
his knees, and intricately worked, with toes coming nearly to a point.

As he looks around himself, his mouth drops open in an expression of
surprise, and he says something incomprehensible. Then he looks for some
cover.

[OOC - Thanks for the description! That makes it much easier to understand
at both the game and meta-game levels.]

[Duplar]

"What the?"

This human is evidently unlike any Duplar has seen before. He wonders if
this might be one of the "colder" people Ryzar keeps going on about, but had
the general impression that they wore grey rather than blue and tan.

Acting under the universal misapprehension that all alien beings always
speak your own native language [actually they all speak English and Duplar
is the odd ball who doesn't :-) ] he flips his wand to "stun" and aims it
calling "Hold it right there and state your business!"

[OOC: Of course the odds are that this stranger doesn't have a clue what
Duplar's saying, and will not know the non-lethal nature of the stick being
pointed at him in an obviously threatening manner, but Duplar is not used to
friendly creatures arriving this way.]

[RYZAR]
"By the Eternal Flame!" Ryzar groans, "NOW what?"
As Duplar aims his wand, and shouts his demand, Ryzar, too, pulls his dartgun and aims the bronze-colored handweapon at the stranger, in support.

[stranger]

The new guy quickly raises his hands over his head, palms toward the two
pointing weapons at him. This time when he speaks, he's closer to being
comprehensible, but he still seems to be using some strange foreign
dialect. "Hold up, hold up! I give." Then he looks around at the bodies
on the ground, an expression of fear on his face.

The stranger looks in her direction, his hands still raised. "I'm from
the Bar J. Where are we?" His accent is still unusual, and one of his
upraised hands is shaking a little bit.

The stranger takes a closer look at the equipment, not moving from where
he's standing, but just turning his head. He backs towards the wall and
says, "What is all that stuff? Are you guys making a movie? Am I going

"Your claimed ignorance of this equipment will have to be tested, but it is

Accidents like this are not unusual in the Kazathran workshops, so Duplar
doesn't panic.

"Ok, folk! Everyone move out, keep your heads low, crawl if you must
because you really don't want to breath the smoke."

If this were a guild workshop there would be fire extinguishers about the
place (again, because things go wrong with enough frequency that they are
needed). Hoping that the basic shape for fire extinguishing technology has
not changed, Duplar makes a quick scan of the area.

If he sees any more of the blue "off" buttons he'll press them. If he sees
anything like an extinguisher he'll grab it and use it. If none of the
above, he leaves.

Another stranger appears suddenly, awkwardly, as if he took an
unexpected step down. He catches himself, landing in a crouch.
Muttering what must be an oath of surprise, he stands.

A large metal frame is strapped to his back, bearing what looks like a
very full traveling pack other gear. In his right hand, he has a metal
staff. His hair's short, mostly covered by an inscribed cap with a
short, front-facing brim. He's wearing a foreign style of spectacles,
and a day's facial hair.

His jacket is of multicolored fabric, parts of which catch the light.
Beneath that, a heavy pull-over style shirt with writing on it.
There's an unfamiliar object around his neck- like a thin metal torc
with what may be fur of some kind at the open side, and wires hanging
off, into the jacket. He's wearing calf-high boots, and black pants
made of a tightly-woven material (with seams and rivets). He may be in
his twenties, but it's hard to tell.

Rising, and seeing where he is, he takes an involuntary step backwards
and thumps into something solid- causing him to drop his staff. He
looks behind him, then sees he isn't alone. Gathering himself, he
stands calmly. Elbows at his side, he raises his hands even with his
chest, palms facing the new strangers. (Judging by his expression,
this may be meant as a placating gesture.)

The stranger startles, then dives away from the machine and sticks low

To Duplar, accidents like this are not unusual in the Kazathran

would be fire extinguishers about the place, since things go wrong
with enough frequency that they are needed. Hoping that the basic
shape for fire extinguishing technology has not changed, Duplar makes
a quick scan of the area, but fails to see anything resembling the
green water or foam squirting devices he's familiar with. However,
there doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of flames, and the smoke is
rising to the top of the chamber.

He looks for further blue "off" buttons on the control panels. Before
he can find anything, a second stranger appears suddenly, awkwardly,
as if he took an unexpected step down. He catches himself, landing in
a crouch. Muttering what must be an oath of surprise, he stands.

Judging by his expression,
this may be meant as a placating gesture.

The second stranger sees a lot of people and smoke, the smoke rising
to the top of what might be a large room. The smoke and lack of light
makes it hard to see quite how large the chamber might be. He looks
around, trying to sort out what happened, and tries to take in the
details of the room, to see if anything there can explain what's going
on.

If no-one seems overtly hostile, he's carefully reaching for his
staff, one hand still outstretched as before. Getting it back, he
clears his throat, but seems thunderstruck, at a loss for words.

Duplar is getting a tad stressed!

"What!! Another one?? What is this place?? A travel agency??"

"You! Get over there by the wall with the other stranger. Unless you
happen know what this equipment does, there's just me trying to stop
the whole lot going up in smoke! We'll sort out who is who and where
people think they are once I've got this safely shut down".

The new arrival's expression changes rapidly, over the course of a few
seconds. First, his astonishment at seeing what's clearly an alien,
speaking English, no less. Then, his eyes narrow in annoyance when he
gets what's being said. He takes a quick, studied look at the
equipment, concludes that it's outside his field, and walks resignedly
over to the wall.

Walking up to the other stranger he stops, taking a vantage point to
see both him and the rest of the scene. After a second, he says
"Hello. Do you have any idea what all this is?"

"Not really", the other guy says,-"I think they might be aliens. They
seem okay...I'm Roy, by the way"

The new guy extends his hand. "Hank Jenkins.".

Ryzar is currently in what they might recognize as a "two-handed
combat stance" -- and he's pointing what looks disturbingly like a
large, bronze-colored automatic pistol at the pair.

Hank keeps his hands visible, but doesn't return to the gesture he was
making. Instead, he seems to be taking careful stock of the situation,
especially keeping an eye on the gunman near him and the tall alien by
the console.

"Just do what Duplar told you to do and you'll be fine, Kolderspawn",
the young-appearing Ryzar says with a cold professionalism.

Briefly looking over at his neighbor, Hank silently mouths the word
_Kolderspawn_?"

Roy shrugs and points his head at the corpses lying around the room.
"I'm not arguing".

"Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it," mutters Dharak,
the dreadlocked figure in well-worn leather armor and a mud-spattered
cloak. "Thus were our mothers and fathers dragged into bondage".

He blinks his dark eyes, his expression snapping from wonder to
alertness. He gestures at the newcomers with a rather nasty-looking,
pistol-like weapon. "Step away from there, brothers. If Duplar can't
figure out how to turn off the machine that brought you here before it
explodes, then we might have to get out of this place in a big hurry."

Keeping half an eye on his prisoner, he turns to Jal. "We need to
gather up our prisoners, our wounded, whatever alien weapon and such
that we can, and haul ass," he half-whispers. "Or have you forgotten
what our vordral guide told us about a whole gaggle of his people who
are right nearby -- and are likely friends of this lot we just
slaughtered".

"Yes, we need to get out of here", says Jal, a grizzled-looking fellow
nursing a nasty-looking wound on his arm says, "But what shall we do
with our prisoners? And these two? Can we send them back?".

Duplar studies the control panel, and intuitively finds a control that
he feels certain is the master shutdown button. He presses it, and
the vortex collapses with an enormous signing sound. The lights on
the control panel go dim, and the chamber falls eerily silent. The
smoke rises to the ceiling of the twenty-foot high chamber.

"Someone's coming!", says Jal, "I can hear footsteps!". He draws his
sword.

[Reylorna]

A small frown crossings the young woman's face as the mirror shuts down.
She is dressed in dirty white robes with a belt that holds a dagger in its
sheath. She has a small pack on her back. The moment of relief that the
strange mirror has been shut down is mixed with the loss of the opportunity
to explore one of the greatest mysteries that she has ever known. The
respite is very brief as she hears the exlamation that they are being
approached. She moves to a position of cover and prepares herself for yet
another battle for her and her companion's lives.

[Hank]
Hank takes a practiced look at Jal's wound. He shifts, and produces a pouch
from a belt near his waist. He looks ready to offer aid.

>"Someone's coming!", says Jal, "I can hear footsteps!". He draws his
sword.

"Wait a-!" Hank sees Jal and his compatriots steeling themselves for battle.
He hastily re-fastens the pouch, and reflexively tightens the main straps of
his pack. Staff clenched in his white-knuckled hands, he nervously eyes the
entrance, but also the heavily-armed strangers he's been thrown in with.

To no one in particular, he says "What the Hell IS this?"

The noises seem to be coming from the side tunnel, the same one as the
one from which the beast-men had emerged earlier; the footsteps stop,
but there are voices.

Through a combination of gesture and mindspeech Dharak urges his
fellows to begin a tactical withdrawal. The wounded Kylar is already
on the 'right' side of the side tunnel. He asks Jal to mind the
prisoner, while he himself scoops up any loose advanced weaponry,
including the hand-weapon that the prisoner had used to wound Jal.
Jal binds the prisoners hands and begins to gag him; he indicates in
no uncertain terms that he's slit his throat if he cries for help.

The voices (which has sounded human or kandar) have stopped. In the
dim light with smoke still hanging in the air it's difficult to see
into the darkened side tunnel.

Roy sneaks away from the tunnel, heading in the direction indicated by
Dharak. If _these_ guys, who have rayguns and space warps, are scared,
then he doesn't want any part of whatever's in the tunnel!

Hank, tentatively follows Roy's lead. Eyes still to the direction of the
voices, staff still clutched tightly, he sidles towards where Dharak
directed.

[Did Dharak use the Mindspeech on Hank? If so, he clenches his eyes shut and
shakes his head as if to make it go away. Otherwise, proceed as planned.]

[OOC: Sorry to be posting piecemeal like this. Hope it makes sense in the
'final cut'. Where I think I was: Hank 'stood his ground', then the sight of
seeing Roy follow Dharak's direction made him back/sidestep cautiously
towards the 'safe place'. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this places
him near Jal and the wounded Legionnaire, right? If so:]

Hank gets a good look at the wounded man, and seems to resolve himself.
Very quietly, he once again removes the pack from around his waist. With one
hand,
he holds it up to show a small, red emblem on the front- two short, red
lines intersecting
at a 90-degree angle.

Still keeping half an eye on the entrance, he whispers the word "Medic",
with an expression
that seems as if he's asking permission.

[OOC: If he's not near, but still under the gun, ignore the above. Also, I
think I may need to make a "die roll" soon, how is this done?]

[Dharak OOC: He's trying to help get the wounded Kylar, their prisoner,
and the two new guys back down the tunnel without another firefight.
Based upon how the last fight went, he thinks it makes sense for him and
Ryzar to guard the retreat with their pistols from covered positions
behind the same consoles from which they were firing in the last fight;
while Jal, Reylorna, and Duplar drag/carry/guide the other four back
down the tunnel to where the quaan and Karmorkis are gagged and hogtied.
Then, hopefully, we can escape the tunnels altogether and get back into
the wilderness without getting ambushed or overrun in the process.]

[Dharak]
The teacher takes up a firing position behind the console. "Ryzar!" he
stage-whispers, pointing with his free hand at the other bank of
equipment across the tunnel. "Everybody else, get back down the tunnel!"
he hisses. "Keep that prisoner quiet! Go!"
