After finishing the meal, Rotemdol goes back to the Dragon to set the wheels in motion about finding lodging for his new apprentice. "Who was that horrid woman", Lulmyra asks as they cross the square, "You were right to tell her how rude she was". "I didn't like her either. Typical human trollop", Ayruna adds. They step inside the Dragon, the resident security, Karr, greeting him at the door. "Who are these two?", Karr asks Rotemdol, "Is one of them your new assistant everyone's been talking about?". -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com Read my blog! http://www.kalyr.com/weblog
> "Who was that horrid woman", Lulmyra asks as they cross the square, > "You were right to tell her how rude she was". > "I didn't like her either. Typical human trollop", Ayruna adds. "I am not sure" Rotemdol replies " she is not from around here, I think, else I would have seen her by now. Anyway, there were rumors of a women who fits her description who trashed some knights lately who where misbehaving with women and I think it might be her, so don't go out of your way to pick a fight with her" > "Who are these two?", Karr asks Rotemdol, "Is one of them your new > assistant everyone's been talking about?". "Karr meet Lulmyra, my new apprentice. It will be some time before she start earning her keep but the talent is there. The older sister is Ayruna and the young gentleman is Teyrath. Karr" Rotemdol says turning to the kids "is in charge of security here at the Dragon" Rotemdol will then go inside and introduce the kids to the staff. He will make it known that he is looking for suitable lodging. "If you have any belonging you need a place to store till I find a place for you I could put them in my room here" Rotemdol tells the kids Rotemdol will then continue to the temple and put the kids there. He will listen to the news if any talk to Oluna .. (he is interested in some permanent guest but will not steer the conversation directly). After a little time Rotemdol will continue to train at Banjo's.
"Karr meet Lulmyra, my new apprentice. It will be some time before she start earning her keep but the talent is there. The older sister is Ayruna and the young gentleman is Teyrath. Karr" Rotemdol says turning to the kids, "is in charge of security here at the Dragon". Ayruna looks at Karr with a degree of suspicion. Rotemdol leads them inside introduces the kids to the staff, Ronn and Shilu, who work the bar, and the general dogsbody Vakell. Ayras Ni isn't around at the moment, to Rotemdol's disappointment; he's got the widest contacts in the city. Karr says he's due back in the evening, but doesn't know where he is. Rotemdol makes it known that he is looking for suitable lodging, but unfortunately none of the staff present know of anywhere outside the more disreputable human quarters, where three young kandar would be rather vulnerable. Perhaps Ayras might be more helpful when he returns. "If you have any belonging you need a place to store till I find a place for you I could put them in my room here" Rotemdol tells the trio. They're non-committal on this, preferring to remain at the safety of the temple as long as they can. They return to the temple of Valarna. Oluna isn't around, but he does hear bits of a conversation between a wounded knight and older priestess. "Tomorrow?", says the knight, "If she's well enough to travel". "She's up and walking", the priestess says, "But her mind..." "It will come back, I'm sure", says the Knight, "She needs to see the outside world again; they'll bring her back. She seems to know who I am now". Then the two of them step inside, and Rotemdol hears no more. Saying goodbye (for now) to Lulmyra and Ayruna, he heads back to Banjo's for some training; can't let those skills go rusty! Late afternoon, at a time when Banjo has disappeared on some errand, he has a visitor, someone he's met only once, a couple of days ago, but recognises immediately. "Do you have anything to report", he asks, dismissing any opening pleasantries. -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com Read my blog! http://www.kalyr.com/weblog
>"Do you have anything to report", he asks, dismissing any opening pleasantries. "Well" Rotemdol replies " Tanala was in the temple so far, which is the reason she is alive. Apparently she is doing better physically, but not so well where it counts. I have overheard her knight friend saying that he, and I assume some others, will take her tomorrow for a walk. I could try to make it her last one. However, I still do not see what's the rush, is it only that you think it will be easier for me before her powers return or is there some deadline?"

"You said it yourself", he replies. "I am no expert in powers of the mind, and in the recovery of those who have suffered mind-burning as she has. It could be that her mind is so badly damaged she will never recover; she may be as a small child or a feeble-minded idiot for the rest of her life. But it's equally possible she will fully recover, and recover quickly. So the sooner she is brought to a premature end the better. We might not get as good a chance again!". -- Tim Hall, http://www.kalyr.com Read my blog! http://www.kalyr.com/weblog
"We have a different perception on the task" Rotemdol replies " and being that it is my neck that is on the line I prefer mine. The problem is never that of killing someone, this is easy, but that of getting away without being caught. The fact that she is invalid makes the killing part easier but ensure that she has entourage. I do have an idea though, and will try to see if I could execute it tomorrow when they take her out. Information now is everything. I need to know when she goes and what route she takes. If you come up with anything let me know. The route is the more important piece of information" [ooc: the plan that Rotemdol is considering is that if there is a likely place she will go through, to wait above on one of the roofs and use a head shot with a cross bow. The ideal location will be such that he could climb out of it even further to another street and be gone by the time they have any chance of making it through the stairs. My understanding is that many places are steep. A location which usually you have to climb to to get to fast will be perfect. I assume he has two crossbow somewhere] [ooc: as I am ahead of Zul in time we should probably wait for her thread till we find out if our path cross]

Zul ... ========================================== On seeing Zul enter Rotemdol turns to his 'friend' "Hopefully I will take care of business soon. You are welcome to stay and watch, this girl here present an interesting enigma" Rotemdol moves to welcome Zul " Happy you could make it. I see you already warmed up, very good" [ooc - please describe what Zul is dressed in] [Location description. You entered the narrow side of a large room, about 6 by 9 meters with two columns in the middle. It seems that a few rooms where combined into one. The left half of the opposite wall is covered with weapons, mostly knives, of many designs, and has a door in the middle. The right half open into a smaller room 3x3 which is padded on the floor and the walls. Flanking the door you have entered from, are two man size knife targets. In the close left corner there is a small table with three chairs next to it. Next to the walls are a few closets with equipment. You can smell Italian cooking (if you happen to be able to recognize it)]
[Zul OOC: A thousand pardons. I´ve been kind of all over the place for the last three weeks or so.] [Zul] Once she´s back in the Anthill and finds a quiet corner somewhere, she takes a minute to tidy up. She ties her hair back in a neat bun, forgoing her usual tousled look, and finds a pump where she can wash up. Upon finishing, she heads over to Rotemdol´s place at an easy pace. She enters without even glancing at all of the training equipment, instead immediately turning to face Rotemdol. "Good day, teacher," she declares in perfect Filgan, inclining her head respectfully. "I was not aware you were expecting an honored visitor. Please excuse my most inconsiderate intrusion." She bows slightly more deeply to Rotemdol's guest. "Begging your pardon, most kind sir." >From: "Shmuel Ur">Reply-To: kalyr+calbeyn@phoenyx.net >To: kalyr@phoenyx.net >Subject: Re: Kalyr: 86c - Of Lodgings and Training (Rotemdol) >Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2003 07:13:53 CDT > > > >Zul ... > >========================================== > > > >On seeing Zul enter Rotemdol turns to his 'friend' "Hopefully I will take >care of business soon. Rotemdol shows Zul to one of the closets " Please put anything that is not firmly attached, including jewelry, here so that it will not snag when we train". After waiting for Zul to put in whatever she wishes Rotemdol will show Zul the training weapons. [ooc: mainly wooden versions of most weapons] " Choose whichever fit you fancy and lets spar a bit. Let see what you can teach me" Rotemdol says as he picks up two wooden knives one of which has an elaborate guard the other a much smaller knife possibly balanced for throwing (unlikely for a wooden weapon). Banjo comes from inside and sits at the table to watch
[OOC: What did/does Rotemdol's guest look like, does he have any response to Zul's salutation, and does he stick around to watch the sparring session?] [Zul] "Yes, teacher." If her humble bearing and use of proper Filgan is somehow intended as a sarcastic joke (which, given what Rotemdol already knows about her, it just might be), Zul isn't letting on. She removes her long leather coat (swirling it to keep her nirvork concealed) and places it in the cabinet. She pauses, glancing at the guest, her cheeks flushing a bit. "If it pleases the teacher, this one would request a moment of privacy -- in the interests of modesty, you understand." She gestures at her rather loose-fitting, long-sleeved tunic. "I believe I should change into something less likely to snag. Might you be so good as to turn your backs, or could I make use of another room?" When given the opportunity, she removes her tunic and changes into a snug, short-sleeved shirt -- and she transfers her small throwing knife from her wrist to her ankle, hidden under her wide-bottomed trousers. Her large knife remains on her belt. >From: "Shmuel Ur">Reply-To: kalyr+calbeyn@phoenyx.net >To: kalyr@phoenyx.net >Subject: Re: Kalyr: 86c - Of Lodgings and Training (Rotemdol) >Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2003 14:15:05 CDT > > > >Rotemdol shows Zul to one of the closets " Please put anything that is not >firmly attached, including jewelry, here so that it will not snag when we >train". "I believe I > should change into something less likely to snag. Might you be so good as to > turn your backs, or could I make use of another room?" "Banjo, Could you show her to my room to change?" Rotemdol asks. When they go into the appartment he turns to his guest " Can you place her accent? she seems to use a lot of them. I have seen her use some version of kalmas, she claims she is good with the nirvork which we will check in a few minutes. she certainly did not learn all of this around here." After listening to his guest response, and after Banjo and Zul returns and Zul chooses her training weapons, Rotemdol turns to Zul "The only rule is that no one should get hurt. Make sure you are always under full control. If you see an attack coming which you need to do something wild to avoid let it get in, this is only practice. Any questions before we start?"
[Zul] "No, teacher." She has chosen a matched pair of large wooden knives (if any were available with hand guards, she chose those). Zul then faces her much taller opponent pretty much head-on, in a right-forward stance, her right foot turned slightly toe-in, with perhaps 60 percent of her weight on her back foot. Her lead hand is extended in front of her, the point of her knife directed at Rotemdol's sternum. Her off hand is close to her chest, with its knife held nearly erect. Her back is straight, but her shoulders are relaxed. She gazes not at Rotemdol's eyes, but at the center of his chest. It appears that she's trying to keep her face impassive, but when Rotemdol assumes his stance, a tight half-smile creeps onto her face. She waits for the kandar to make the first move -- unless he asks her to take the initiative. >From: "Shmuel Ur">Reply-To: kalyr+calbeyn@phoenyx.net >To: kalyr@phoenyx.net >Subject: Re: Kalyr: 86c - Of Lodgings and Training (Rotemdol) >Date: Tue, 2 Sep 2003 01:13:22 CDT > > > > > "If it pleases the teacher, this one would > > request a moment of privacy -- in the interests of modesty, you >understand." > > She gestures at her rather loose-fitting, long-sleeved tunic. If this was serious he would have worried about if she knows the style she is showing, faking one style and possibly using another, or just showing of an opening stand that she learned somewhere but as he will know the reply soon he is not overly concerned. Rotemdol starts the sparing with very simple moves, moves to combinations and then back to simple moves this time with no tell (no warning whats coming, takes a lot of time to develop and is usually the mark of a master) and then back to simple combinations. By now it is fairly obvious that he is ambidextrous. If she handles all this well Rotemdol will increase the pace. All this time he will be using variety of styles and moves to see what Zul is familiar with and will try to trace her teaching. When Rotemdol see that it is getting too hard for Zul he will announce a break. Whenever Zul does something nice Rotemdol will be visibly pleased, especially if she gets past his guard (and he will not be trying particularly hard). [ooc: let me know how good I think she is, and if she is good enough to become a sparring partner]
[Zul] Her knife-fighting style is economical and direct, with no right angles and no big movements: quick thrusts and short chopping arcs. Her parries flow immediately into counterstrikes. She attempts to offset Rotemdol's longer reach not by backing up, but by slashing his attacking arms, then moving closer to strike at his torso. Her style isn't much to look at, but she knows what she's doing. She's clearly right-handed; her defense with her left is just as good as with her right, but her left-handed attacks don't have the same crispness. Just when Rotemdol thinks he has her figured out and takes a hard swipe at her head, instead of parrying, she suddenly ducks forward into a somersault, rolls between his legs, and finishes up doing a split on the ground under him -- with the edges of both her knives pressed up against his inner thighs. (OOC: Do kandar have femoral arteries? Well, if they do, then Rotemdol will know that's where Zul has placed her blades.) [ooc: Tim, I am waiting for Rotemdol's evaluation of how good Zul is. Please let us know if she can stop simple combinations (given my skill). When she start doing flashy combinations I will not stop them] As it is becoming obvious that Zul can handle herself (if thats true) and that she is looking for more challenges, Rotemdol will start increasing the tempo. still doing nothing fancy. However he is starting to attack twice, three times and sometimes four times a round and it is obvious he is not going full out or trying very hard. As the tempo increase Zul may realize that she does not even see all the attacks. Rotemdol goal is to press Zul to see how she reacts when she is out of her depth, assuming he can get there. From what she said he thinks that knife is not her main weapon and will ask her to choose another weapon if she want to show him her stuff. "Somersaulting" Rotemdol comments while moving with total unnatural speed but without seeming to be breathing hard "carries the danger of not seeing the attack coming, If is hard enough even when you face your opponent, if he is semi competent" [Zul] Her knife-fighting style is economical and direct, with no right angles and no big movements: quick thrusts and short chopping arcs. AAAGH! I WILL POST MY NEXT MOVE WHEN I FIND OUT WHETHER ROTEMDOL'S GUEST IS STILL WATCHING, WHAT HE LOOKED LIKE, WHAT HE SAID, IF ANYTHING, TO ZUL, AND IF HE LEFT, WHEN HE LEFT, AND WHAT HE SAID TO ROTEMDOL WHEN HE LEFT. THIS CRUCIAL SCENE DETAIL IS THE SOLE DETERMINING FACTOR IN ZUL'S BEHAVIOR TOWARD ROTEMDOL -- INCLUDING THE LANGUAGE SHE IS SPEAKING -- AND I'M NOT WRITING ANY MORE POSTS WITH TWO VERSIONS OF WHAT SHE DID, ONE FOR IF THE GUY'S WATCHING, ONE FOR IF THEY'RE ALONE.
