Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr: 97d - Debriefing (Hank and Roy)

Hank and Roy are interviewed together. Their official debriefer is
the senior official who greeted their arrival the night before,
Galtheyn.

"I'm Galtheyn Tyr, head of the Technical Division in this city. We
met last night", he says, "And Jathren tells me that the two of you
stepped through what we believe to be a dimensional portal device. Is
this true? And what can you tell me about wherever it was you came
from. And finally, what can we do with you?".

Roy says, "I don't know about any portal device -- I was back home, then I
was in some strange other place." He continues with a description from his
viewpoint of his arrival.

"What do you want to know about America?"

"I wouldn't mind a job working with horses, or on a ranch. I could fix cars,
too, if you had any normal ones."

"But mostly, I think we need to be gettin' back home."

Kalyr: 97d - Debriefing (Hank and Roy)

>Hank and Roy are interviewed together. Their official debriefer is

>Galtheyn.

Hank is uncertain about how to proceed- he'd been advised not to divulge too
much about his background, but at the same time, he doesn't want to lie. How
to treat it- like an interview? A police questioning...?

"Yes, it is. I regret, I can't add anything about that- the 'trip' was
involuntary, and I don't understand how it worked."

> "And what can you tell me about wherever it was you came from."

"I'm from the United States of America, the same as Roy, though from another
region... what would you like to know about it?"

> "And finally, what can we do with you?".

"That, I don't know. I'd like to get home, too. In the meantime... Well, I
spoke with Mr. Duplar, and he mentioned the Karazthan. The Technical
division, mainly. What is it like? I'd like to hear from you..."

"Focussed at one end" Galtheyn leans back. "Interesting". He pauses
in thought. "How on Kalyr did they focus it? Was there a mentalist
there? Can you remember?".

"What can you tell me about wherever it was you came from", Galtheyn
asks.

"I'm from the United States of America, the same as Roy, though from
another region... what would you like to know about it?".

"Is that a city, or a world?", he asks, "Do the people of 'Merika'
know of Kalyr and it's people?".

"And finally", says Galtheyn, what can we do with you?".

"That, I don't know", Hank says, "I'd like to get home, too. In the
meantime... Well, I spoke with Mr. Duplar, and he mentioned the
Karazthan. The Technical division, mainly. What is it like? I'd like
to hear from you..."

"I don't know if Jathren and Duplar have told you much about how our
guild is organised", says Galtheyn. He pauses in thought again. "We
have three divisions here. There's the Administration Division; they
do all the paperwork, and do all the dealings with other guilds. Then
there's the Security Division, their role is to protect the guild from
out enemies. And finally there's Technical, with more people than the
other two put together. We build and maintain every machine in Kalyr.
Much of the work we do in our workshops; we have places like this in
every large city. But some Technical people have to go to wherever
the machines are; everywhere there's one of our machines, you'll find
people from Technical. Even at sea; some of us are sailors, looking
after the engines.

"I wouldn't mind a job working with horses, or on a ranch", says Roy,
"I could fix cars, too, if you had any normal ones. But mostly, I
think we need to be gettin' back home"

"Horses?", replies Galtheyn, "What sort of machine are those? Or cars?
I think our machines will be quite different to the sorts of things
you're used to. It all depends on how quickly you two can learn new
things. How about we give you two a tour of the workshops?"

"Not much. Sorry. I had finished- [Here, Hank remembers the difficulty hie
had describing the Peace Corps, and sidesteps...] other duties, and was
hiking in the mountains, for fun. I got separated from my group, and wound
up here.

When I arrived, all I saw were the others in the group that arrived with us,
here, and their other prisoners. If there was a mentalist- I didn't see him.
Up until we got here, I had never heard of mentalists, so..." (waves hand to
imply 'I wouldn't recognize one if I'd seen it, at that point')

"I tended to Kylar's wounds, as best I could, and Roy and I carried him. We
had some opposition- people with beam weapons. We drove a cloud of bats from
the cave as cover, and the others used the distraction to gain the upper
hand."

"We traveled, and now we're here."

>"Is that a city, or a world?", he asks, "Do the people of 'Merika'

"It's a nation- a union of fifty component states, over a large part of a
continent. Oh, and a chain of islands- can't forget Hawai'i!"

(Ponders the 'Kalyr' question. He sits in thought, for a moment.)

"I won't say 'no', categorically- because 'impossible' seems to describe
what happened to us [Roy and Hank]. I can tell you *I* hadn't heard of
Kalyr, or the Kandar, or the Kazathran, or cat-men, or... well, you get the
point. So, if anyone knows of it, it's not public knowledge."

>"Horses?", replies Galtheyn, "What sort of machine are those? Or cars?

" 'Horses' are draft and riding animals. Roy's people are well-known, in
America, for their skill with them." (No harm in building his resume!)

" 'Car', I think, would be like a 'Power-Waggon'. Carts driven by engines."

>I think our machines will be quite different to the sorts of things

A minor alarm bell goes off in Hank's head.

"So long as we don't see any proprietary Trade Secrets. We wouldn't want to
break any oaths of secrecy your people have sworn..."

Subject: Re: Kalyr: 97d - Debriefing (Hank and Roy)

With a slightly apologetic air, Hank adds (to Roy's statement):
"I don't know. No organization _we_ belong to, at any rate."
>A minor alarm bell goes off in Hank's head.
[OOC: What I was trying to sidestep, here, was a "You've seen our Secrets,
now join us or die" trap. There may or may not've been one. Hank's getting a
wee bit overcautious...]

"Yes, absolutely."
(Where's Hank's pack? If he stuck with his 'don't leave the pack out of
eyeshot' policy, he shoulders it.)

Galtheyn nods, as though the concept of governments covering up stuff
is a familiar concept to him.

>"Gasoline combustion engines. How do the ones here work?" Roy asks.

"Not like that", Galtheyn replies, "Rulana wouldn't approve; she'd
never let us get away with that. We use sealed power sources, and
electric motors".

"Yes, absolutely.", Hank replies. He shoulders his pack, which he'd
not let out of eyeshot since he arrived.

"You seem attached to your backpack", Galtheyn comments, "There's no
need to carry it around all the time in here. What have you got in
there?".

He takes the pair of them down in a lift to the big ground floor
warehouse they entered the night before. The big doors stand open
now, with a view outside, mostly taken up by a large watercraft.

The whole place is an underground cavern, cut out of the rock into the
hillside. Several large openings wide enough to drive a vehicle
through lead off in various directions. Galtheyn leads the pair
through one of them.

"This is the large vehicle repair shop", Galtheyn says. Before them
stands an eight-wheeled chassis similar to that of the vehicle that
carried them the day before. Several workers are lowering a large
rectangular grey object into a space just about the size of that same
large grey object, by means of a complicated array of pulleys and
chains attached to a beam in the ceiling.

"They're installing a new power source", he says, "We've already
replaced all four traction motors; the old ones will be stripped down
and reconditioned".

Roy figures out how the motors are arranged; each one seems to operate
one pair of wheels, through a complicated arrangement of gears. It
appears all eight wheels are independently steerable.

(How big are we talking, again?)

Hank takes a look at it- naval engineering isn't a field he has even one

This is nothing like the size of a cruise liner or supertanker; it's
probably similar in size and shape to a 19th century Mississippi
riverboat, although there's no smokestack or paddle-wheels.

Roy takes Galtheyn at his word, at least until he sees otherwise.

Roy wonders if that means now they're going to be given a cigarette and a
blindfold. It'd almost be worth it if they let you finish the cigarette, he
thinks.

Hank looks back at Galtheyn.

"Would it help," he suggests, quietly "if we solemnly promised not to tell
anyone else? I could."

(It's not like we understand what he's talking about, at any rate. Shouldn't
be hard.)

"I won't tell anyone either," Roy adds.

"Won't tell anyone what?", replies Galtheyn. "Don't look so frightened.
We're not going to chop you head off quite yet".

Galtheyn indicates the hive of industry that represents the workshops.
"So, what do you make of this?".

(OOC: About Galtheyn's take on the Guardians- you got that, right? He said
he shouldn't have told us, so Hank was trying to help.)

>"Don't look so frightened. We're not going to chop you head off quite yet".

Hank wasn't especially frightened, until he was told not to be. Now, he's
starting to get nervous.

>Galtheyn indicates the hive of industry that represents the workshops.

"Very interesting. It's not like anything I'm used to, though- so I don't
know that I'm qualified to comment on it."

"I'd be interested to learn more about your organization, though... just for
curiosity's sake. How long would someone have to work, to be down there? How
does 'rank' work? That sort of thing..."

[Yes, and so did Galtheyn: sorry for not making it clearer!]

"That's a difficult question", Galtheyn says, "Because there seem to be
more exceptions than there are actual rules. Most of the people you see
working here are the children of guildsmen and women. There there are a
few orphans who the guild has adopted. But occasionally we have
admitted adults to the guild, people in situations such as yours. Once
we have proved your loyalty.

"As for rank, I'm afraid everyone starts at the bottom; how far you rise
is purely a matter of ability, not whose bed you were born in. The
Karazthan is the only organisation in the whole of Kalyr for which that
is true. Come up from the roughest part of the human quarter of the city
and ascend to guildmaster of the city; it can be done!

"There are people at the bottom in the workshops; apprentices run
errands, sweep floors, and of course, *learn*, which is the most
important. And down here it's the Technical division, where we repair
and build our machines. There's also the Administation, who deal with
the paperwork and records, and the deals and negotiations with other
guilds. And there's security; Jathren and Duplar's people. You should
already know about them".

Roy's eyebrow goes up a bit at "loyalty".

"How quick can you get ahead? I mean, is it guaranteed that you'll sweep

"That depends", he says, "Nobody spends much time sweeping floors; we
promote based on ability. But very few people start here that can
already do things with machines; we are the only people in the whole of
Kalyr that can make or repair our devices; nobody really learns the
skills except from us".

"Very occasionally there might be a child growing up in another guild
that uses machines supplied by us, who watches their operation, and
observes our technicians who come to service and repair them, and figure
out for themselves how to make them work. We sometimes recruit such
people, as they become excellent technicians. They are quick and eager
to learn".

"Saying that, I do not know what a 'carburetor' is; our machines do not
have such a component".

"Oh, your stuff's fuel-injected? That's alright." Roy nods, then says, "I
was always more of a hand with animals than machines, though. Or guns, but
it looks like yours are better'n ours were."

"Excuse me", Galtheyn says. He fishes a black rectangular object out of
his pocket, about the size of a CD case, and holds in front of his face.

"Hello", he says, speaking into it. There's a voice coming out of it,
but neither Hank nor Roy can make out the words.

"I'm showing them round the workshops", he says.

The think speaks again.

"Right.... OK... ".

"Duplar's coming down to see you two", he says to Hank and Roy.

Roy says, "That's a really big cell phone you've got there."

Hank tries to say something to make that statement not happen, but
fails to do it in time. He closes his mouth, and puts a palm to his
forehead.
