Hank and Roy are interviewed together. Their official debriefer is the senior official who greeted their arrival the night before, Galtheyn. "I'm Galtheyn Tyr, head of the Technical Division in this city. We met last night", he says, "And Jathren tells me that the two of you stepped through what we believe to be a dimensional portal device. Is this true? And what can you tell me about wherever it was you came from. And finally, what can we do with you?". -- Tim Hall Weblog: http://www.kalyr.com/weblog Photos: http://kalyr.fotopic.net/

I'd like to hear from you..." "I don't know if Jathren and Duplar have told you much about how our guild is organised", says Galtheyn. He pauses in thought again. "We have three divisions here. There's the Administration Division; they do all the paperwork, and do all the dealings with other guilds. Then there's the Security Division, their role is to protect the guild from out enemies. And finally there's Technical, with more people than the other two put together. We build and maintain every machine in Kalyr. Much of the work we do in our workshops; we have places like this in every large city. But some Technical people have to go to wherever the machines are; everywhere there's one of our machines, you'll find people from Technical. Even at sea; some of us are sailors, looking after the engines. "I wouldn't mind a job working with horses, or on a ranch", says Roy, "I could fix cars, too, if you had any normal ones. But mostly, I think we need to be gettin' back home" "Horses?", replies Galtheyn, "What sort of machine are those? Or cars? I think our machines will be quite different to the sorts of things you're used to. It all depends on how quickly you two can learn new things. How about we give you two a tour of the workshops?" -- Tim Hall Weblog: http://www.kalyr.com/weblog Photos: http://kalyr.fotopic.net/

I got separated from my group, and wound up here. When I arrived, all I saw were the others in the group that arrived with us, here, and their other prisoners. "You seem attached to your backpack", Galtheyn comments, "There's no need to carry it around all the time in here. What have you got in there?". He takes the pair of them down in a lift to the big ground floor warehouse they entered the night before. The big doors stand open now, with a view outside, mostly taken up by a large watercraft. The whole place is an underground cavern, cut out of the rock into the hillside. Several large openings wide enough to drive a vehicle through lead off in various directions. Galtheyn leads the pair through one of them. "This is the large vehicle repair shop", Galtheyn says. Before them stands an eight-wheeled chassis similar to that of the vehicle that carried them the day before. Several workers are lowering a large rectangular grey object into a space just about the size of that same large grey object, by means of a complicated array of pulleys and chains attached to a beam in the ceiling. "They're installing a new power source", he says, "We've already replaced all four traction motors; the old ones will be stripped down and reconditioned". Roy figures out how the motors are arranged; each one seems to operate one pair of wheels, through a complicated arrangement of gears. It appears all eight wheels are independently steerable. -- Tim Hall Weblog: http://www.kalyr.com/weblog Photos: http://kalyr.fotopic.net/

"That depends", he says, "Nobody spends much time sweeping floors; we promote based on ability. But very few people start here that can already do things with machines; we are the only people in the whole of Kalyr that can make or repair our devices; nobody really learns the skills except from us". "Very occasionally there might be a child growing up in another guild that uses machines supplied by us, who watches their operation, and observes our technicians who come to service and repair them, and figure out for themselves how to make them work. We sometimes recruit such people, as they become excellent technicians. They are quick and eager to learn". "Saying that, I do not know what a 'carburetor' is; our machines do not have such a component".

"Excuse me", Galtheyn says. He fishes a black rectangular object out of his pocket, about the size of a CD case, and holds in front of his face. "Hello", he says, speaking into it. There's a voice coming out of it, but neither Hank nor Roy can make out the words. "I'm showing them round the workshops", he says. The think speaks again. "Right.... OK... ". "Duplar's coming down to see you two", he says to Hank and Roy.

Hank tries to say something to make that statement not happen, but fails to do it in time. He closes his mouth, and puts a palm to his forehead.
