Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr 104 - Happenings [All]

Four days after the death of the witch Tanala, there's yet another high
profile assassination. This time the victim is Baneydol d'n Aluseyn,
Guildmaster of the Guild of Construction. Baneydol, much like Tanala,
was an extreme kandar chauvinist, who restricted humans in his guild to
labouring positions. He died, along with both his bodyguards and two
bystanders, when the assassin threw a bomb from across the street. A
great many others suffered injuries, while the assassin made good his
escape in the confusion.

The following morning, the city was covered with slogans in the same red
paint as before

Tanala was first
Baneydol was second
Who will be next?

Yet again, people were press-ganged into cleaning up this graffiti; this
time it wasn't just street layabouts, but the guilds diverted any
surplus labour to the task. In the case of the Karazthan, that meant
Roy and Hank, using some foul-smelling cleaning agent on non-porous
surfaces, or a coat of whitewash (or greenwash or pinkwash or bluewash)
on porous ones.

A week after that incident, there's an amazing sight in the skies above
Calbeyn. An airship! Those who claim to know about such things say
that only three of four of these craft still exist in the whole of
Kalyr. It's the first to be seen in the city for many years, an
indication that whatever or whoever it carries are extremely important.

It ties up to a mast above the Karazthan, which nobody can ever remember
seeing before. It doesn't begin unloading until after dark, when
witnesses report a great many sealed boxed and containers being lowered
and carried into the Karazthan.

Trying to breathe through his mouth and really, really wishing for a
smoke, Roy says to Hank, "You know, this looks kind of familiar. Might not
be the best time to have shown up around here."

Is it like a lighter-than-air kind of vehicle?

Either it's lighter-than-air, or uses some kind of levitation. It's
shaped like a rugby ball or an American football, with little stubby
wings on either side, too small to generate much in the way of lift.
There are what look like jet engines slung beneath it.

The craft which attacked them in the hills was more like a plane. This
is a lot more like an airship.
