Not long after the unloading of the airship, apprentices summon Duplar, Ryzar, Hank and Roy from whatever they were doing for an urgent meeting with the acting guildmaster, Kala d'n Konyen. "You've seen the airship", she says, as soon as the four are assembled, "It's come back from the tunnel complex. We sent a combat team in, and we now have control of the entire complex. The airship contains much of the machinery. It also contains several prisoners we've captured. Among them are individuals of races unknown to us, not native beings to Kalyr". "You three", she indicates Roy, Hank and Ryzar, "are not Kalyr natives, and have known other worlds. I would like you to observe these prisoners, in a hope of identifying them". Part of the large storage cave at the back of the complex has been turned into a secure storage area. It contains what the four recognise as parts of the machinery from the tunnel complex. A lot of it is burned or half-melted, and some looks to have been crudely sawn into sections in order to get it out of the tunnel. Kala leads them into another chamber beyond, guarded by two grim-faced Security Division guards neither of whom Duplar has ever seen before. The chamber has been divided up into several holding cells. The first contains three of the orange-furred creatures, one of whom is badly burned. The second contains a humanoid, more human than kandar, but with a large bulbous nose. "This third one is the most strange", Kala says, "He's completely catatonic. It might be possible that the Sisters of Valarna can do something for him, but I don't want to get The Guardians involved in this just yet" The mystery prisoner is tall and thin, like a kandar. He has an alien-looking face, his nose close to bridgeless, his chin too small and narrow to match the width of the upper half of his face. He wears seamless light grey clothing, with a grey cap covering the upper part of his face. He appears to be unconscious, but is still breathing.

OOC: If he really is a Kolder (Kolderoid? ^_^), then he looks a little more "human" than a "Roswell Grey Alien", but still possessing an certain "alien-ness" in his similarity to the Human norm. Even relaxed, there is a malevolence in their presence. The Kolder are a people who consider themselves superior to ALL life, and their disdain for any life other than their own comes through in their personality.V--- On Thu 09/29, Smoot < etrainor@capecod.net > wrote: From: Smoot [mailto: etrainor@capecod.net]To: kalyr@phoenyx.netDate: Thu, 29 Sep 2005 21:55:20 CDTSubject: Re: Kalyr 105 - Prisoners [Duplar, Ryzar, Hank, Roy]> "This third one is the most strange", Kala says, "He's completely>catatonic. [RYZAR]
Ryzar frowned at the mention that the Kolder had alledgedly been found as a prisoner.
"Hmmm. Well, the Kolder hate everyone -- including themselves -- thus they merely use other peoples as pawns. They do not ally themselves, as far as I know. Thus, if these folk who ran the base in the mountains count themselves as enemy to BOTH this world AND the Kolder....then this world is in a dire situation. It has TWO Enemies who weild incredible, mechanical powers."
Ryzar stares at the Kolder prisoner for a few moments, then frowns in concentration -- applying what little Mindspeak ability he has to trying to contact the Kolder.
{Kolder! Awake, Evil One! Kolder! Wake, and identify yourself!} Ryzar mindspeaks with all his will.

"That is not good", Kala says, "But this was the only being of this race
encountered. Is it possible that it is the only one here, and came to
Kalyr in the same way as Hank and Roy, or indeed yourself?".

The Kolder doesn't respond, but Ryzar manages to give himself a
splitting headache.

"Ah!!" Ryzar moans, rubbing his right temple, "I have not the Mindspeak ability to reach this thing!"
Ryzar turns to his friend, Duplar.
"Master Duplar, perhaps Mistress Reylorna could acheive something with this..." Ryzar waved his hand at the comatose Kolder, "After all, she did manage to make contact with the Beast at the Tower -- and you all said that THAT thing was quite alien to this world. Perhaps, as a Witch, she might do better?"

"Perhaps", Kala says, "If you believe a mindspeaker is needed to make contact with this thing". She turns to Duplar, "The Academy of the Mind have assigned her to investigate that assassination. I don't know how that is progressing, or whether she can be spared for it. Are you in the loop on what she's up to?".

Duplar sends his mental probe into the unconscious being. It takes three tries before he manages to lock on to anything at all; his head aches just as Ryzar's presumably has done. The mind is alien, more alien than any mind he has probed before. This is not like the mind of a kandar or a human; it's something quite different indeed. There's a strong emotion of confusion and loss; a swirl of disconnected thoughts, and a great black void where something important ought to be. There are images of machines, not like the mirror machines in the tunnel, and just as unlike the devices of the Karazthan. Then there's a man with a metal cap covering his skull; wires connected to machines. He is the leader. He gives meaning. He is gone. The creature is dying.
