Kalyr is set in my original fantasy world of Kalyr, and focuses on the struggle between the ancient and decadent kandar civilisation, and their rebellious human slaves. It features psionics, arcane technology, strange alien races, mystery and intrigue. Influences include Gene Wolfe & Jack Vance, but don't let that put you off!

Kalyr 108 - Return to Calbeyn

Rotemdol arrives back in Calbeyn.

On the surface, everything seems normal, except that the city guardsman
seem more conspicuous than usual. But he notices that the guilds have
more of their own security in visible positions, and the wealthier area
is crawling with knights, all fully armed.

As soon he starts talking to people about the arrangements for his next
show at The Dragon, he learns that all is not well. Although there
haven't been any more assassinations, the authorities have been
responding by large scale arrests.

"I know some of the people they've taken", Karr, the Dragon's security,
tells him. "Most of them have no political connections at all. I think
they're just picking up random people. Then they'll torture them for
evidence or false confessions. Or mind-ream them to fish for information".

"Your mate Banjo", he adds, "I think they took him".

Kalyr 108 - Return to Calbeyn

Rotemdol is worried, but then acting on rumors will not get him very far.
He goes to check on Lulmyra who was suppose to train under Banjo, she is
closer. Have to learn the facts first, maybe it is not as bad as it sounds
he hopes. Rotemdol is very upset, the idea that someone may mind-ream
Banjo, his teacher and best friend...

Lulmyra is looking worried when Rotemdol approaches.

"What's happened to Banjo?", she asks, "The priestesses won't tell me,
but I can tell they know something".

"I was not here I have no clue. Which priestess? tell me what you do know"
Rotemdol asks Lulmyra.

"They arrested about a hundred people", says the priestess that Lulmyra
indicated. I know one or two of the people they took; they're not the
sorts I would have thought of as troublemakers. Like your friend Banjo".

"I would think most of them are completely innocent; they guilds have
gone crazy since people started throwing bombs about; they want blood,
and they want scapegoats to be beheaded in public to make an example of.

Maybe they're going to mind-ream the lot of them to sort out the guilty
from the innocent, but the mood they're in, they might not even bother
with that".

Kalyr 108 - Return to Calbeyn

Rotemdol is worried, needs to get more info, goes looking for Ayras Ni. If
he finds him (hopefully at the Dragon) "Hey Ayras, do you have a clue
what's going on? I am looking to help Banjo"

Kalyr 108 - Return to Calbeyn

Rotemdol finds Ayras Ni at the Dragon. The place is very subdued,
almost empty in fact.

"They arrested him in the square outside", Ayras says, "The city guard
and a whole bunch of guild security. They seem to think he's something
to do with that bomb a few days ago. But they've arrested dozens of
people; I think they're all in the dungeons below the citadel".

Kalyr 108 - Return to Calbeyn

"Do you have any clue what they plan to do with Banjo and the rest?"
Rotemdol asks Ayras . "Any idea on how to get him out?". "I do have good
contacts in the guild and the guards, who do you think will know best?"
Rotemdol is visibly mad (at least to people who know him).

"You're not the first person who's asked me that today", Ayras replies,
"Lots of people's loved ones swept up".

"First, does Banjo have anything to do with this Right Hand of Vandrak
that's taking credit for the stuff going on? If he does, they'll
mind-ream him for sure".

"I've got a contact in the city court office; he might be able to find
what's going on; I don't think he can pull enough strings to get Banjo
out, and it might be too risky for him to even be seen meeting a lowlife
like me at the moment.

"Now, who are your contacts you talked about?".

Kalyr 108 - Return to Calbeyn

"I am sure Banjo has nothing to do with them" Rotemdol replies. "As to my
contacts, I guess I have not thought of it as such. I know all the guards
who are involved in training new recruits, and many of the newer guards,
some are even good friends. I know the regulars who come to my show
including a few from the Karazthan. Anyway " Rotemdol continues agitated "
anyone who knows Banjo knows that he will not use a bomb, I mean you have
seen him with a knife, if he wanted to kill people why use anything else"

"All I can advise is that you try and get hold of those contacts of
yours, and see what they can tell you", Ayras replies, "But I warn you.
Be careful. At times like this trust is an expensive commodity; you
could end up falling under suspicion yourself if you ask too many
questions of the wrong people".

Kalyr 108 - Return to Calbeyn

" Lulmyra" Rotemdol call "get ready, we are going to the citadel".
Rotemdol takes equipment both for a small show and for training and go to
the citadel. Hopefully he will find some instructors who would be
interested to train a bit with him. If not he will see about setting a
small show.
