Another tour of duty is over. Months spent in uncomfortable accommodation on a bleak mountainside, with terrible food and even worse weather. This time they never so much as saw a zughru; the three fatalities suffered by Kanon's unit were all accidents; Arlu Harrish missed his footing on patrol, falling down a crevasse and breaking his neck. Daleth d'n Havaluis' flamelance exploded in his face during target practice, giving him terrible burns, from which he died two painful weeks later. And Vorluis d'n Tureyn was crushed to death when the wagon he was riding in overturned on a steep mountain 'road'. So it's back to the city, with decent beds, good food, and good taverns. As soon as they're officially off-duty, Kanon is swept along with the rest of his patrol to the usual watering hole for off-duty Legionnaires. The Six Diamonds, just round the corner from the barracks. They're not the only Legionnaires there, of course. Quite a few of those based in the city assigned to patrolling the roads are already installed in one corner of the bar. Among them is the drill instructor known universally as "Boots". Boots is universally hated by new recruits on the drill field. They tend to change their view of him once they've survived a tour of duty in a combat zone. "The wanderers return", Boots says when he spies Kanon's group entering. "Since I bet you haven't been paid yet, the first drinks on me. But don't overdo it. You might well be called on duty tomorrow; a lot's been happening in the city!".
A roar goes up and as the newcomers rush to the bar and get their drinks. First, a quiet moment as former comrades are toasted, then a roar as it is bottoms up as the younger legionnaires associate with the Six Diamond regulars without care, everyone knowing full well they have no coin to be swindled out of that day. Kanon walks over to the corner of veterans, and raises a mug. "By the Guardians, I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad I had you riding my sorry ass all those months. Hear, hear! three cheers for Boots, maybe the only bastard tough enough to beat into us fools the sense to survive!" "Three cheers! Hip hip hoorah! " Kanon and his mates cheer their drill instructor, and drain their mugs.
"Thank you", responds Boots. "I always know you'd appreciate me in the end!". "Don't think your work is over", he continues, "You return to a city undergoing interesting times. They haven't arrested all the whores just to stop you from blowing all your pay you haven't received yet. There's murder and foul deeds in the city". "Who and what?", asks one of Kanon's fellows. "Two guildmasters dead so far, plus one wizard", Boots tells him, "Orchestrated by terrorists. One of them threw a bomb into a crowd to kill the guildmaster of the Builders. Lots of bystanders killed and injured too. Someone's declared war on the city, and nobody's safe". "Have they arrested *all* the whores?", asks another, "And why them?". "Your guess is as good as mine", Boots responds.
"So the city guards are loosing control? Are they calling for the legion to work in the city?" Some snickering around at the prospect of ruffians fighting soldiers is heard. When you can't do that, you find someone to carry you. - Firefly ---- Some of my pictures at http://flickr.com/photos/lugerla ----- Original Message ---- From: TimTo: kalyr@phoenyx.net Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2006 12:11:11 PM Subject: Re: Kalyr The Six Diamonds Tavern [Kanon] "Thank you", responds Boots. "We all know the city guard is just a rabble", Boots says, "Half of them were too incompetent to get a job as guild security, and the other half are on the take from the crime bosses. The Tharn, bless her soul, doesn't trust them as far as she can throw them. The Knights, especially the Kardak ones, are bloodthirsty thugs; put them on the streets and you'll have a massacre. That leaves us. Loyal, disciplined, honest: that's the Legion".
"Can't deny that shows some sense. So much for a nice boring stay in garrison." Another of Kanon's fellows chimes in "If it gets the whores out the dungeon, tell the Tharn we're ready!" *cheering* First you run, When you can't run, then you crawl. "Hi Boots" Rotemdol says after he enters the Six Diamonds Tavern. "I see that some have returned alive. Just came from the Citadel, and if I am not mistaken there is going to be some action there. Have not seen flamelances used in the last five years outside training but the crowd is big and in an ugly mood, Is the entire legion back for police duty?" [ooc: most of the new recruits will know him as a part time entertainer who also helps with martial training, mainly hand to hand. The old timers know him from his time in the legion. Those who do not know him may recognize the marking on his Nirvork. A uncommon weapon in the legion, usually used by nobles or officers. Rotomdol's is with the legion mark's on it and looks especially impressive even of what you see right now is only the handle]
A roar goes out amongst the recently returned legionnaires Boots chuckles "Good timing Rotemdol, I think you have your answer" One of the new recruits [Kanon] speaks "I take it that someone wants professionals on the job" Another yell from the crowd "If it gets the whores freed, just point us in the right direction!" ----- Original Message ---- From: Shmuel UrTo: kalyr@phoenyx.net Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 2:18:34 AM Subject: Re: Kalyr The Six Diamonds Tavern [Kanon] "Hi Boots" Rotemdol says after he enters the Six Diamonds Tavern. Replying to Kanon but talking to Boots " The people on guard are knights of Clan Tyr and legionnaires with flamelances. Did not get close enough to recognize any of them. I think there are too few of them, and therefore people may die. " Spotting Sigalath, one of the Nir-Tavonoleyrs Rotemdol moves to his table and talks in a quieter tone (not a wisper, just something that does not carry very far) " Sigalath, I think you should send some people to the Citadel on the double, maybe arm them with training Narvork. Having to few people on guard means that weapons will be used and this may get out of hand. I was never an officer but as a chief kalmas instructor I can tell you that if they let the crowd get to close quarters they may not live to regret it"
Assuming that orders are now coming through the chain of command, Kanon will fall in and arm appropriately. Presumably, for non-lethal he will have a baton at his side, as well as his non-standard bola in addition to the unedged Narvork. If the rules of engagement include having lethal weapons available, the choice would be a crossbow slung to his back. Presumably others would be assigned edged Narvorks or Klunarks.
"Hey, these guys have just come back from the mountains", Sigalath replies, "Are things getting that out of hand already?". His question is answered by a new arrival, Tavonoleyr Joran. "Oi!", he says, "Listen up and pay attention!. You may or may not have heard of the situation at the citadel, but it's getting out of hand. I want everyone here who's still sober enough to keep a level head to muster as soon as possible. We've got orders to restore order, *without* a massacre. Which is what will happen if we leave things to the knights". "Anyone that's too drunk to follow that, stay here. We don't want any 'accidents'".
"Joran, I have just come from the Citadel to report and get some people sent. I am ready to go back now" Rotemdol is armed and in leather armor. " Maybe some should start for the Citadel now so by the time the rest arrive the situation will be already assessed." Rotemdol pauses waiting for reply, and then continues " On second thought maybe someone with enough rank to take over the guard should come along." "If things look bad, and we need a little time, we can buy it by releasing a prisoner or two and saying that we are considering the rest. The crowd is that because there was a rumor that something bad is about to happen to them"
mutters "well, we did not have time or coin to get properly drunk anyway" as he and most of the other legionnaires head back to barracks to don armor and either shield and training Narvorks or training Klunarks according to their place. A few legionnaires are pulled aside as they go, clearly giving a lie to Kanon's statement. But the mutterings and chatter ends as they muster in front of their barracks. Kanon takes his place, shield resting in front of him, waiting for orders, eyes on Tavonoleyr Joran.
"Trouble is, something bad is likely to happen to them", Joran says, "My understanding is that they're going to mind-ream the lot, and then release the innocent ones. Anyone that's got guilty secrets...". He makes a throat-cutting gesture. "You got someone in particular you think they should release?". Once the legionnaires have kitted up, Joran musters probably half of those who had been in the tavern. They're joined by a similar number who had been on barracks, or reassigned from guard duties for which they could be spared. It amounts to about forty men. Not a huge force, when this is meant to be a show of strength intended to discourage bloodshed.

When Rotemdol hears "they're going to mind-ream the lot" he cringes visibly. "You know how I feel about mind_reaming" he tells Joran " Since the three incidents a number of years ago me and them try to meet as little as possible. My knife throwing teacher, Banjo, was caught in the sweep. If something happens to him I am afraid I might loose control again" Rotemdol will walk with Joran on the way to the Citadel

I know the fellow; doesn't strike me as a revolutionary sort of character. I wonder who he's managed to upset?".

"I was not around when they took people" Rotemdol replies " From what I was told they just came and pick many humans. I assumed the situation was also used to by some to get even, but I do not think Banjo had many enemies"

And I think there's some settling of scores involved. Guard's as corrupt as hell; half of them are in bed with organised crime. "But the RHV is for real. Somebody killed Tanala and Baneydol, after all; and if it wasn't the RHV, I don't know who it was. But I'm a soldier, not an investigator. I just obey orders".
"I don't understand much in politics but I reckon you are right, someone settling score or a random arrest" Rotemdol replies " I will do my best to get him out, If they rape his brain I will have my own score to settle"
"You claim not to know much about politics, but that sounds like revolutionary talk to me", Joran says, "But off the record, whoever's in charge of this is playing into the hands of nutters like the RHV".
