So at quarter to five (or was it quarter to four?), Firebird drops off the
net (taking wirebird.com, phoenyx.net, and liveoaks.org with it).  Huh,
sez I, from my vantage point in Beautiful Downtown Wichita.

Come home, find the sysadmin already here working on it (that would be
Carl...)  The modem is desperately trying to make a connection, going
kaboing kaboing, no dice.  So we leap into the corporate vehicle and make
a run to the offsite hardware storage facility (that would be the van, and
Best Buy), and pick up a brand new Sportster.

On the way back, Carl is discussing his troubleshooting attempts:  try
various other modems (in case it's our upstream modem that died), try
switching the modem over to another computer.  "Did you try the other
phone line?" I asked.  (Note clever use of foreshadowing.)

So we pop the new modem in place, and it also dials, hears the other
modem, and goes into endless kaboing kaboing, kaboing kaboing mode.

Yeah.  It was the phone line.  So we're back on the net, *and* we now have
a spare modem (which we'd planned to do all along...)
