RE: Frequently and Newly Asked Questions

I'm noticing the occasional "Hey everybody, I was thinking of starting a
game. If anybody's interested, I'll get a list over at [insert freebie
service du jour] and we can play!" Apparently many list subscribers don't
have any idea that "phoenyx.net" at the end of a mailing list name means
anything roleplaying-specific (okay, so I wasn't thinking like a marketing
person FOURTEEN YEARS AGO when I picked the name...oh dopey me). What
would be everyone's feelings on a periodic (monthly?) posting (or a
standardized FAQ entry, for those of you who have them) just to say "This
address, Joe-Bob Sez Check It Out" kind of thing? Violent objections?
Apathy? Confusion?

>>>>I don't have any problem in mailing something to those on my list on a
monthly basis or so.

I think that the main question though is what are you hoping to achieve with
them? The quality of most of the applications for hosting games has been truly
dreadful. I'm wondering whether it would accomplish much just to get thousands
of not very good applications coming through.

Just my initial thoughts anyway.

Bye for now,

Nick

Historically, we've had a much higher acceptance rate from people who've
started games after playing/lurking in a Phoenyx game. Generally
speaking, they are more likely to know the kind of quality level we've
(hopefully) got.

Not a few of our dreadful proposals have been from people who have never
even *played* PBeM but suddenly decide that it sounds fun and that, having
run face-to-face or IRC for X years, they must be qualified to run a good
PBeM.

That does not explain the canonical Dreadful Proposal (November 1997...
hasn't been topped yet):

That makes me thankful that I put some thought into my submission!

Just wanted to say "Hello All" and to thank you for letting me
aboard. Hope I prove to be a worthy addition.

Have you ever thought about putting a little of the philosophy of Phoenyx up on
the website? At the moment, there's nothing that really says a great deal
regarding the necessary criteria for becoming part of the family.

I think that, were it made clear from the start that only games that meet
reasonable levels of literacy, experience and that are going to last a lot
longer than a week, etc. are likely to be accepted.

If this was to happen, then I think that it would stop a lot of the garbage
submissions coming through and also show to potential players/lurkers that a
game run on Phoenyx is most certainly a rung above your average PBeM.

Bye for now,

Nick

Good idea, and one I've kicked around for awhile but not gotten anything
done on.  Let us all know when you have a first draft written.  :}

Hey I don't mind doing it if you'd like. Bull*ting is what I do for a
living! It would make me feel a little less guilty for the fact that I don't
understand a word you techy types are saying most of the time, so am always
bugging you to help me when I have a problem with the list.

I'll get you something to look at in the next 48 hours or so.
