Brainstorming

Pursuant to tonight's chat, we're addressing Phoenyx members,
and their needs. We're using _Community Building on the Web_,
by Amy Jo Kim, and we're in Chapter 1 right now.

We've tentatively got three types of members: gamemasters,
players, and lurkers, and we'll probably be doing some surveys and
whatnot to try to get some feedback on what they're really like.

Meanwhile, some brainstorming is in order. Per the book, "don't
censor your thoughts: the purpose is to write down everything you
can think of that your members might look for and possibly find in
your community."

And these are the questions: "Why are they coming to [our]
community? Are they looking for something specific? What can
[our] community do for them?"

Brainstorming

Are the answers you want more of inclusion or exclusion?

You can find out some about who the survey takers and
the active (by posting) members of your community are
with surveys, but it's just as important to decide who you
         do and don't want to have. That's a meta-brainstorm
(my current job does community-building training) I'm
afraid, but I'll think some more to add on this that isn't
         just methodology...

I'm sorry I missed the conversation again; I'm in the middle
of trying to sell my house, buy a new one, and I'm quitting
my job Friday so things have been hectic.

Mommmm, she's censoring her thoughts.

Going first means I get to take all the easy answers.

They're coming because they want free mailing lists.
They're coming because they're looking for games and Phoenyx
and Irony always get mentioned in the same breath, which isn't
necessarily a good thing because Irony, at least, sucks big,
mossy rocks.
They're coming because they like [insert game or property] and it
turned up on a search.
They're coming because they were looking for pr0n (this answer
applies to every web site that's ever been referenced by a search
engine and most that haven't).

Some are not looking for anything specific, they're just browsing.
Some are looking for an opening in a specific game.
Some are looking for an opening in any game as long as it goes at
least three or four weeks before the gamemaster disappears.
Some are looking for players.
Some are looking for an opening, and decide to look for players
when they don't find one.
Some are looking for candy recipes.
Some are looking for web forums.
Some are looking for a place to advertise their game.
Some are looking for a dotcom to buy.
Some are still looking for pr0n.

We could provide free mailing lists requiring no technical skills
whatsoever.
We could provide advertising.
We could provide openings.
We could provide openings that can be easily found.
We could provide openings announcements that are culled for
duplicates (did I mention that Irony sucks?)
We could provide players.
We could provide gamemasters that last at least five days.
We could provide gamemasters that finish their games.
We could provide web forums, even though some of us hate them.
We could provide character sheets.
We could provide Cyberboard.
We could provide Grip, even though Jim Dickerson is a lout.
We could provide Jabber.
We could provide pr0n.

You said uncensored, so some ideas are stupid, impractical, or
otherwise.
