Chat fallout, part 2

Okay, this one is an easier question. I'm writing up the first
Phoenyx newsletter in a heck of a long time. What goes in it?

Well, my game, "The Glitter and the Glamour" is still
looking for someone to run Caine.

I am looking for a co-GM for an Urban Fantasy
(think _Wizard of the Pigeons_ meets _Neverwhere_
meets "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead")
FUDGE PBeM. FUDGE wizards please apply; I'm
not very secure with the system yet.

I volunteer to mentor people for Amber DRPG PBeMs,
         including web page design.

Does that help, or am I completely on the wrong track?

A list of all the games that have openings

Welcomes to all the games that have joined s/i/n/c/e/ /t/h/e/
/l/a/s/t/ /o/n/e/ in the last month

History of the Phoenyx, part one in an irregular series?

A look at the people behind the Phoenyx (not just you and Carl, but
also the editors and GMs as well), another part one in an irregular
series?

Those are my ideas

Okay, who has openings?

Better yet, *everybody* answer whether you have openings or not:

How many players do you have, and do you have any openings
(now or in the near future)?

(This'll be a good way to prune out the dead wood, on account of I
strongly suspect we have a number of gamemasters who aren't
going to answer...)

Karen,

PostCon is getting ready to come back off of hiatus after a birth in my
household. Thomas Easton Day was born to my roommates on June 9, 2001
and has had the three of us running around like loonies. Hate to think
what it would be like if I was doing more than playing Uncle Steve.
Free time has been non-existent as it is.

As for my game's status, currently, I have 12 players with a 13th coming
on as a replacement after a recent departure. Right now, I do not
believe that I will have any openings in the foreseeable future.

Aside from the obvious and wrong answer, which I'll leave for
Carl...

Brief paragraphic summaries (teasers) for the full articles on the
web page, as has sometimes been done with the front-page news.
Indeed, the front-page news should be the same series of articles,
or nearly so.

That is an /ugly/ way to italicize, if that's what you were doing.

It's not italics, it's implied strike-out, since you can't do a "real"
overstrike in ASCII.

Yeah I have 3 members right now, not one as responded to any of my
e-mails so I've all but given up on them :( as for openings I have
Plenty! i'm looking for at least 4 people (desperately searching might
be a better word) and I hope to get more. I think I wrote my eulogy when
I used Ars Magica 4th edition as my game's system. I haven't been making
it to the Chats 50% because the whole interface confused the heck out of
me when I tried to get a character or whatever and 50% because I'm
always busy (that's what attracted me to PBeM, you can do it at 11:15 at
night ;-). If your looking to clean out dead wood you can take my game
(legacy) down if you would like since I am seriously doubting I will be
getting players anytime soon. On the other hand if anyone wants to offer
some help some how I would be very grateful.

Hanover (the Lebensraum campaign) has openings a-plenty. I've got two
solid players and a third untried, even though none of them have been
posting for lack of time. I hope to turn that around in the next month
(summers can be PBEM slow).

Rumors of War: 19 players and ~5 openings at present.

I don't think I can handle more than that at the moment.

And how many players have you got so far?

(In today's chat, we discussed what percentage of the subscribers
are actually players, which the current software doesn't tell me.)

Currently 6 players, game running v...e...r...y s...l...o...w It
will sometimes go for a week without any players responding, then all
six will post within 24 hours.

If my arm gets twisted enough I'm prepared to consider either starting
off a second party of PCs, or getting 'guest stars' to to play NPCs.

FYI, the parallel web-based game has four players, some of whom are a
very erratic. This game _does_ have openings which I can't fill :(

Me.

Since I'm running two games now, I'll answer for both.

First, "deusx" can always stand a new player or two.

More importantly, "atp" is just getting started and I'm looking for a few
good victims (say 5 at most). I''m looking for people who have absolutely
no experience with the game we're going to be playing ("Continuum" by
Aetherco), but are willing to take a chance and stick their necks
out. I'll walk them through everything and there will be a very supportive
player group to help out, but they're just going to have to trust me on
this one. Note however that this game is very cooperative & team-oriented
(besides requiring a decent amount of thought and commitment), so loner
types and those who are already involved in 200 things are discouraged from
applying. Also, this will be an amazingly good game for lurkers (I hope),
so anyone interested in watching one of the most innovative role-playing
games ever should take a peek.

Hope you can turn that paragraph into an advert somehow, Karen :)

Later.

Man, just having everybody do the roll call has made me feel better about
my games (since they seem to be more active than most).

Since I forgot before, "deusx" has 6ish active players and may soon get
another.

"atp," though just getting started, already has 7 people who say they're
interested. How many actually stay is another story, which is why I have
openings.

Okay, since you're trying to build community, I'd love to have quarterly
blurbs from each of the GM's. You could talk about your game, how it's
going, and try to get feedback, help, or pats on the back from everyone
else here. I guess I just feel like I don't know anything about the rest
of you guys or what kind of games you run. Letting us all have a peek at
each other's games would do a ton to improve GM comraderie, I think. Hey,
we could even hold hands and sing "Kumbaya."

Besides that, we could get a volunteer every month to write a few
paragraphs on "things I've learned from/about running PBeM's."

Doing things like that, the Newsletter would almost write itself and it
would take some of the burden off of Karen and Carl. Anyway, just some
thoughts.

Oh yeah, and would you GM-types mind signing your posts to this list with
the name of your game? I keep having trouble matching names with what you run.

Can we skip the "Kumbaya" part? I had enough of that way back
when. . . .

For both the above things (Game Blurb and "Everything I Need To Know I
Learned From Runnning PBeMs"), can someone remind me a while in
advance that my turn is coming. I'll need to work it into the rest of
what I'm doing. :-)

Okay, I just changed the append file ("list-sig"). If everyone runs
out to the listowners page (see list-sig) and changes their
Nickname to be the game(s) they run, it'll eventually start
appearing there, as soon as I remember what the appropriate
wildcard was.

OK, let see if this works. I got three "Error writing file ."
messages on the web page when I updated my settings.

Yeah, that's on account of I was tweaking the script because I
realized it was pointing to the old, .INI-based records instead of the
newer SQL-based overlay. (Which is *exactly* why I haven't
switched any game lists over to the SQL-based bit, even though it's
more reliable than the .INI stuff.)

You managed to catch the working version at the tail end of the
session, though, so it seems to be happy.

I got at least one, but not when I pressed 'save' again.

I got four the first time, and I think just one the second.

Okay, I just checked. Those are bogus errors, since it doesn't
actually "write" the file anymore... it's fixed. (The error eventually
went away because no changes were being made, and thus the
script didn't think the file needed to be "written" anymore.)
