Whoo-hoo!

I just wanted to shout in joy.
    Thank you, Phoenyx.

I have figured out subtopics and really sat down and read all of
the help and now that I've told my players, they're telling me
how "really cool" this all is.

Now I'm actually thinking of a game that would take advantage
of the features here. I've been wanting to run a "solo" game
of "Bluebeard's Wives" (a scenario for Amber I designed a while
ago) but to run it with several individuals in tandem.

Maybe as "The Glitter and the Glamour" progresses.

Anyway, I'm totally psyched, and wanted my appreciation known.

Whoo-hoo!

Can you tell the rest of us now....? In really little words. :-)

They -seem- really powerful but I can't seem to wrap my head around what
they do exactly or how to use them in play. Are they essentially subtopics
with their own mailing lists?

I'd have to say basically yes, but here's more.

I can tell you what I'm doing, and with some help from
the help page, I'll see if I can make it make sense. Anyone
with more knowledge is welcome to amend, append, or exclaim.

After a discussion about a "Chat" or "Kibbitz" list, I
	looked into the subtopic help.

	http://www.phoenyx.net/help/mod_topics.html

What I wanted was to set up two lists. An "OOC Chat" list
for various chatter, and a "Fashion" list so we can say stuff
	like:

	"DAY ONE:

Fiona is wearing a red dress, made entirely of lace, one layer at the
top, in a keyhole cut, that turns into two layers of lace in the mid-calf
length skirt. She wears a red velvet jacket over it, that extends into tails
towards the back. Her hair is gathered with a golden hairband, and
around her neck is a red velvet band. The pendant of the band is a
golden dragon, an affectation of hers. Soft red slippers complete it."

...and what I can do is sort that into a different "folder"
(your mail program may vary, but almost all of them can
do sorting) so when I decide Fiona's cutting her clothes off
in an orgiastic frenzy of hermetic magic, I know what colour
scraps will be left on Julian's floor. Of course, if it's
day two, I'll have to search for that.

	Just an example.

	The configurator was pretty simple.

TOPIC is what you want to name your sublist.
Make this short because when you send messages, you'll
be sending it to YOURLIST+TOPIC ...at phoenyx.net
	(presumably.)

While I originally had it at "OOC_List" I just made
it "OOC" once I understood. And instead of making
	people send messages to "glitglam+descriptions@phoenyx.net"
	I titled the other "Fashion."

TOPIC TAG is what is going to be added to the message subject.
So you want to probably add something related to your
list in it. The Glitter and the Glamour goes to "GnG"
	already, so now it's "GnG-OOC" and "GnG-Fashion".

TOPIC DESCRIPTION is fairly obvious; it's the "info" on
	the list.

READERSHIP is tricky because when you're making the subtopic
it asks, "everyone, no one, or example". Example is (I think)
when you duplicate an existing topic (I can only come up
with a reason or two why). Otherwise, do you add "everyone"
or "no one" (set for "opt in" or add everyone, basically.)

I did this wrong; OOC should have been "opt in" and Fashion should
have been by default (since it's in-game versus out-of-game.)

THEN, when you've "ADD"ed your subtopic, it changes to "default
Y/N?" which is, when you join the group do you get added by
default, versus your current subscribers in the first question.

TOPIC MODERATION is basically how is it being moderated. If
you make a subgroup for "announcements" you might want to moderate
	the posts.

One of the neat things the help page says is if you want all
group traffic to happen within subtopics, you can set that
up as well. This is what I want to do with "Bluebeard's Wives:"
each person would be running the Bluebeard game with a subtopic
of, say, "Joe" for their character name. So they would send
mail to "Bluebeard+Joe" and I'd modify all this for that...

There's lots of other good advice in the file. I basically
very liberally cut-and-pasted from the help files into a main
message for the Glitter and the Glamour group, and I intend on
building an abbreviated version into the FAQ function (which
	is another neat ability here...wheeeee!)

My message, if you're interested, is at:
	http://www.phoenyx.net/glitglam/2001/08/msg00012.html

I hope that helps. Heck, I hope it was accurate, but
that's how it SEEMS to work.

Whoo-hoo!

thank you Meera...I kept putting off answering so I could actually comment,
but since I still don't have time to be coherent, I at least wanted to thank
you for the explanation. It turns out I was not that confused about what the
sub-topics do after all. Your examples made it a lot clearer.

You're welcome. Sub-topics are one of the powerful features that aren't
available in any other list software that we're aware of.
