The diesel generators in one of the major network facilities in Lower
Manhattan ran out of fuel this afternoon; we're now seeing a lot of
delayed messages to places like poly.edu (which is in Brooklyn,
but obviously routes through the affected facility). Presumeably,
they'll get fuel within the four-day (or are we up to five?) retry period,
but in the meantime there are some posts that will just sit out there
waiting and waiting and waiting.
So don't panic if you don't get a response from someone in New
York; it could be that they didn't get around to their email until this
afternoon, and now they can't get any mail out. Providers that
weren't down before are now, but it's "just" a power problem.
('Course, diesel fuel *and* wall power may be equally hard to come
by in the area for awhile yet.)
We may adjust our autobounce periods to accommodate this, if it's
still undeliverable at 72ish hours.
