What with a toddler making increasing demands on my time, and Earthlink buying out our ISP and cancelling business (i.e. server- capable) DSL, I think it's about time to end on a high note. Actually, I was just checking to see if anybody actually reads these messages, the last few having gone out with no response. What I really wanted to say was, don't forget we have a chat Wednesday night, 2030 CST (0230 Thursday morning GMT). We'll be talking about technical/programming volunteers mostly. And probably moving all the chat info (and transcripts) into the Wiki, and maybe remodeling the MOO again. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): The Whole Phoenyx Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/

This is *not* the way to start a day. My heart is still beating some extra. Yes, I read these messages. juuso PS. A good one, though. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): Godfather/list maintainer of Celandra Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/
Don't scare us like that :) I almost fell off my chair. Yes, I read every message sent to the list. The Phoenyx has only had a web presence for a few years, but we've been in business for 16, having started as a dial-up BBS dedicated to PBeM games. We moved onto the net gradually, starting with a QWK packet (BBS offline reader) gateway that let Internet users send and receive QWK packets. We eventually built an Internet email to BBS forum gate way. Both of those were done via a standard dial-up account. After that, we moved to UUCP, which is a true multi-user Internet mail transport mechanism... it's dial-up, so we weren't live then. We paid for a domain name and a web host to give us a live web-site, but it wasn't interactive with the list server software. In January of 1998, we subscribed to a dedicated modem and went live 24x7. In 2000, we switched to DSL. Somewhere in there, we abandoned the BBS and moved entirely to a Linux platform, but I can't remember exactly where. We were doing UUCP on the Windows box and gating messages back and forth between the BBS software (Remote Access, if anybody cares) and the UUCP spool. But I don't recall if we were doing UUCP on the Linux box, or if the transition to the live connection coincided with moving to Linux and abandoning the dial-up altogether. By the time we went 24x7, we had virtually zero dial-up users. It was an odd feeling, knowing that we weren't a BBS any more, but an Internet site. But the Internet was destroying the local BBS scene and I think we made the transition pretty smoothly. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): Fudge, Worldmaking, Fantasy Co-Editor, Phoenyx Co-Owner Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/

Was your old DSL symmetric, or did they just have an AUP that let you run servers? Back when I was in California, my very enlightened DSL provider had no objection to any of us doing anything we wanted with the connection, but the upstream bandwidth was limited to 128k (which meant that it wasn't practical for a lot of servers, but was great for running tests and doing a few other things). My cable modem has this AUP that one can't run any servers, use any VPN tunnels, or in general act like anything other than a mindless content consumer when using the modem. I mostly obey, but I do run an ssh server so I can connect to my machine from work. (Don't tell anybody.) (It's not like I'm offering shell accounts to anybody else, so I'm still within the spirit of the rules.) > Actually, I was just checking to see if anybody actually reads these > messages, the last few having gone out with no response. They didn't offer SDSL... they just allowed servers and offered a business account with static IP addresses. A few weeks ago, we transitioned (very smoothly, I might add, by having two live DSL connections) to a new provider that offers the same thing. In fact, their entire staff is made up of people from my old provider. (And I used to work at the old provider, so I know all of them.) We *do* run the whole service off of a maximum 128K upstream bandwidth. (And this provider can go higher when we need it in the future.) And bandwidth is rarely a problem... we run more into server load issues. (We got spidered by a dial-up address the other day... probably a spam harvester. It launched several hits a *second* against our site, and when it hit one of the Wiki's, we ran out of memory.) -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): Fudge, Worldmaking, Fantasy Co-Editor, Phoenyx Co-Owner Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/
