	okay... why would an email sent to the list be forwarded on with 
"$descriptor" in the sender's name?

Sender's name (as in "Sender:") or the from name?  If the latter, 
it's because you selected a weird option on your config that isn't 
supported anymore because people only selected it by mistake.  (Of 
course, if I don't remove it from the selection form, that doesn't 
really solve the problem...)  The descriptor is your short group 
name... unless you really, really *want* every message to appear to 
come *from* the group regardless of who posted it, and without any 
evidence of who posted it, you don't want it to show that anyway.  
(It was originally an option for compatibility reasons.  I guess 
there are mailing lists out there where anonymity is important, and 
that's one way of getting it.  But like I said, I couldn't think of 
any reason why a Phoenyx list would use it, so I disabled it.  Just 
apparently not entirely.)
