We're now filtering all Phoenyx mail through SpamAssassin, so hopefully we'll see fewer spam posts (which are really annoying when sent to the magic subscription address....) The old internal filtering routines just weren't keeping up anymore. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): The Whole Phoenyx Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/

None gets through to the list, but I've grown very tired of cancelling all the spam posts. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): Fudge, Worldmaking, Fantasy Co-Editor, Phoenyx Co-Owner Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/

I have had a string of people who have written me begging to be unsubscribed though; the kicker is that they all insist that they never subscribed in the first place! This has happened 3 or 4 times in the past six months. My guess is that they accidently sent an email to the "on" bot when they mistyped an address but I'm not sure about the probability of that many people repeating the same mistake. That's what happens when a subscriber gets a Klez-like virus: the virus appropriates every email address it sees (including the GROUPNAME-on address from the headers of mailing-list messages), and starts forging mail. Since it's not only randomly sending mail, it's randomly forging the "from" line, eventually the infectee's going to send mail *to* the magic -on address that appears to be *from* his (soon-to-be-ex-) friends. Anytime you get a case like that, you can always email, and I can dig up the original subscription post. It's at least possible to tell the domain from which the mail originated, if not the real sender. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): The Whole Phoenyx Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/

I would guess it does the same as span assassin. I also got the same thing, but only once: someone asking me "Why are you people writing to me?". I told her how to unsubscribe. I told her how to unsubscribe. Most people are a little confused but fairly friendly. The last one though was down right rude though. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): MJ Harnish Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/

Usually the rude ones are covering up for the fact that they signed up themselves. If in doubt, you can always ask me and I can pull the logs and show exactly where (IP address, if not always email address) the request came from. If it shows them, and they still deny it, I've found that sweetly offering to work with their ISP concerning this apparent security breach gets a hasty backpedal. Suddenly, they remember signing up now... SpamAssassin is a good fit here because it's a Perl module... since Firehawk is written in Perl, it was pretty easy to plug it in. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Game(s): Fudge, Worldmaking, Fantasy Co-Editor, Phoenyx Co-Owner Listowner tools are found at http://www.phoenyx.net/listowners/
