MGR: Moderation change

y way of combatting the spam that's coming through (even past
SpamAssassin), we're moving to a slightly stricter posting method.

Mail that comes in from non-subscribers won't even be a candidate for
moderation. If it smells like spam, it'll get silently discarded (which
has already been happening, to SpamAssassin's best ability), and if it
doesn't, it still will only get returned to sender (text intact).

There's really no excuse for people to post from addresses that aren't at
least listed as alternates (and the refusal message has always told them
where to go to get addresses listed), so it shouldn't cause legitimate
members any hardship.

Is this for the managers' list, or for all lists?

Sitewide.

I've temporarily turned off the filter that silently discards mail from
nonsubscribers, so you'll probably be seeing the spam that gets past
exim (which REALLY needs its bogus-HELO filter turned on) and
SpamAssassin, at least for the time being.

Also, if you get moderation requests from something like
"member+123435715@phoenyx.net" (numeric member names), and they're not
spam, let me know. It means someone is using an email address the system
didn't recognize, and it just occurred to me that there's no form on the
profile page for people to actually register new email addresses.
Correcting that oversight now.

Web-based moderation will let you say "Oh, this is George. And while
you're at it, bump him to Player status so he doesn't keep getting
moderated." But that's in the next release.

And speaking of that, I may have set posting authorization too high on
some of your groups, so if you get moderation requests for *everyone* let
me know and I'll change it. (You can change it yourself, but I haven't,
y'know, *documented* the procedure yet... details... )

Hi

I'm having some difficulities on the Celandra list. Firstly, I approved some
messages a few days ago (MOD.celandra.8140.1185456866 and
MOD.celandra.26540.1185501327), but they don't show on the list.
Secondly, I'm not getting any status messages.

Hmm. They're still in the modbox, so try again, and I'll watch it this
time. Are you sending to the new approval address (replying to the
messages should do it)?

> Secondly, I'm not getting any status messages.

The new software doesn't send them (yet, anyway). Real Soon Now I'll
write up all the moderator docs and show you how to get all sorts of
info from the web.
