On building a privacy policy

The new software, as you'll have noticed, does a pretty good job of not needing to show email addresses to anyone, almost ever.

I'm thinking, though, that at some point the moderator needs to be able to see them (certainly I, as site moderator, have gone to look them up, though I expect that sort of thing to continue to be handled at a "tech support" sort of level rather than at a group-moderator sort of level), especially when it comes to approving new members and so forth.

What think ye? Do you think it's enough of a selling point to just keep them from the general public and not group mods (especially considering that the software may be used in less laid-back communities than the Phoenyx someday)?

And then: group membership lists. Now that they're not a list of email addresses, would it be okay to have the general public able to look at a group and see who all is in it, and to look at a member and see what groups he's in?

(Look, I am alive! Work's eaten my brain the last couple weeks, haven't been able to keep up with my email.)

For group membership lists, I'd leave it up to the user. Give them an option to "Hide group memberships" or something like that. For email addresses, limiting access to just mods and admins sounds good.

I think I'm going to come down on the side of group owners being able to see email addresses. And I'm with Bill... the individual user ought to be able to choose how much information to expose to the public (or the groups he's subscribed to).

I'm not sure that information is useful to the public, or anybody but the site owners. But again, if the individual user wants to publish his group memberships to other logged-in users, that should be his option.

Yeah, user options are more difficult to code... but leaving it up to the user how much information to expose removes the your responsibility to decide for them.

I agree with Bill and Carl on this subject. There are times when I, as a GM, want/need to see the addresses of the folks that are playing/lurking in my game, but as a general rule there's no reason for the public to see those addresses. Names, optional for the users, but I'm not sure I'd even give an option of making addresses public to anyone other than Mods/Owners/GM's.

If we're voting, I agree, too. Let people opt out of their group membership being shown (preferably on a per-group basis), and let managers see 'em in case they need to contact people.
