Okay, the webforumish front page is okay when we had a boring webforumish layout, but when you compare this:

http://forum.phoenyx.net/group

to its dev counterpart, you begin to see the problem. Granted that's just the topic headers, all strung together, but I can't think of any really good way to format them all together.

So I've started scribbling some notes here:

http://wiki.phoenyx.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/ForumFrontPage

(Hmm, I need to upgrade the wiki. There's a newer WYSIWYG editor.)

Update as you see fit.

My first thought is that the main page should not go more than two levels deep, this one goes three. And each section ("Discussion", "Games", "News", etc.) should be set off somehow.

So it would be something like (no idea if my formatting will come through):

Discussion

----------------

Gamers (description here) (or here) Fudge (description here) (or here) ESpace (description here) (or here) Games

-----------

Celendra (description here) (or here) Akus (description here) (or here) . . . .

When you click on a link, be it to a section (like "Discussion") or direct to a list (like "Galivan"), then you see two levels from that.

If what you click on is a section, you see all the lists and topics for that section. If you go directly to a list, then go to the list, where you will probably just see all the topics but you might want to show the N most recently active threads as well, plus and "All threads" button.

Of course, this is just off the cuff and I'm sure that someone who actually understands User Interfaces and the like could do a much better job of designing one.

Thoughts? Anyone else?

(And yes, I'm at work today and avoiding that.)

Yeah, I'm not really sure what the sidebar will look like, or if it should stay the same forum-wide. I just kind of stuck that in there, and initially "Discussion" was at the level that "Forum" is. But then I decided to stick in planet links, though I'm not really sure they should rate that highly. There's always the top bar for that.

I'm iffy on the description thing. That gets busy so fast.

Eh, I want to watch out for the three-click rule, especially if people are clicking to forum.phoenyx from www.phoenyx (though they may be coming to deeper links already from www).

Yeah, I wish we had someone like that...

Me too, though "work" in my case is "organizing all the stuff I took off the basement shelves so that Carl can build his superhero base down there."

The idea being that someone who looks it has a basic answer to the question "So what's this 'Fudge' thing about? They talk about cooking here or what?"

My guess is that if they are coming over from www.phoenyx then they will be going deeper in on the first click. But I don't now, so feel free to ignore me.

I could ask DrWex if he wants to comment, but he's a bit busy these days....

So how *is* the base coming along? Does he have the hidden poles for quick access in yet?

Yeah, I don't have a good solution to that one. At least, not a solution that doesn't involve a JS patch (tooltips, or an accordion thingy like is in the maps), and that leads to minesweeping. And page bloat.

But first off, I'm really looking for something to go in the content part of the page. The sidebars are a separate (unresolved) issue.

I'm figuring so. I'm looking at the Category pages (Discussion, Games, News) being the most practical jumping-off point, and it's not hard to put direct links on www (I think we have them now).

Yeah, and I have a message from him sitting in my inbox waiting for an answer... though really he needs someone who's a SuSE expert at this point. Carl would shudder if he knew someone was asking me for sysadmin advice...

Plus, right now it's not clear which pages are functioning the way I set them to and which ones are merely inheriting default structure from the template unintentionally, so I don't want him (or anybody else here) to waste time looking at too many pages that weren't intended to work that way anyway.

I've mentioned we have a laundry chute, right? (That's staying, in the Great Bathroom Remodel.)

I thought this was in the content part of the page and not the side bar?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, links to those and when you spot light a group on the main page, a link directly to it.

Maybe you should forward the email over to Carl?

I think it's more the "Call in the expert to give you an overview of what works *before* you spend a lot of time on the details and *then* find out the overall design is broken" type of thing. Not a "how does *this* page look?" but more of a "How should the overall site navigation work and what information should be present at each level?" Then work on how that information is presented.

So how *is* the base coming along? Does he have the hidden poles for quick access in yet?

That works, as long as the "heap o' dirty laundry (tm)" never really all goes away. But it is hard pulling on spandex while in free-fall.

Right. Or maybe the sidebar lives over there, too. Not sure yet.

Probably so.

There's that. Though it's all just templates, anyway... the structure is what it is. And I'm going to throw it all away and write a Javascript client anyway...

That works, as long as the "heap o' dirty laundry (tm)" never really all goes away. But it is hard pulling on spandex while in free-fall.

It lands on top of the dryer, and the ceiling is low, so we're talking maybe a three, four foot difference between that and floor level upstairs.

Karen, how about roll over "tool tips" for the description? Roll the mouse onto a link and it displays a description in a pop up. That would be less "busy" and more accessible to the visually handicapped...I would think. I doubt that would be too hard to implement, it isn't in Java anyway. :)
